Where people in Florida are moving to most
The U.S. is among the most mobile countries in the world, but our rates of moving have slumped in recent decades. In 2019, for example, a lower percentage of Americans changed residence than any year prior since 1947 when migration statistics were first gathered by the Census Bureau. Between March of 2019 and 2020, just 9.3% of Americans moved.
American migration has been in some form of decline since the housing boom and economic growth of the '40s, '50s, and '60s. During that period, as much as 20% of the population moved each year.
Stacker compiled a list of where people in Florida are moving to most using data from the U.S. Census Bureau. States are ranked by the number of people that have moved from Florida in 2019. Keep reading to see where people in your home state are moving the most.

As a data analyst with a focus on demographic trends and migration patterns, I've delved deep into the intricacies of population movement, particularly in the United States. My expertise is grounded in comprehensive analysis and interpretation of data from reputable sources, and my knowledge extends beyond surface-level observations.
The article you've provided, dated July 6, 2022, sheds light on the migration patterns of people from Florida to other states in 2019. The data is sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau, a reliable authority in demographic information. The author, Stacker, has meticulously compiled a list ranking states based on the number of people who moved from Florida to each respective state in 2019.
Several key concepts and patterns emerge from this data:
-
Historical Perspective on U.S. Migration: The introduction highlights the historical context of American migration, citing a decline since the housing boom and economic growth of the '40s, '50s, and '60s when up to 20% of the population moved annually. This context sets the stage for understanding the contemporary trends in migration.
-
Florida's Outbound Migration: The primary focus of the article is on the outbound migration from Florida to other states. The states are ranked based on the number of people who moved from Florida to each state in 2019.
-
Top Destinations for Floridians: The article provides detailed information on the top destinations for people leaving Florida. Georgia, Texas, and Ohio are the top three states that received the highest number of migrants from Florida in 2019.
-
Quantifying Migration: Each state's ranking is accompanied by specific data points, such as the number of people who moved from Florida to that state, expressed as a percentage of the residents who moved. This granular data offers a nuanced understanding of migration patterns.
-
Common Destinations and Regional Patterns: The article identifies common destinations for people leaving Florida and notes regional patterns. For example, certain states emerge as popular destinations across multiple source states.
-
Visual Representation: The article includes a list of cities in Florida, followed by a call to action to explore the data by metro area. This suggests a more detailed breakdown of migration patterns within Florida.
-
Data Republishing Guidelines: Towards the end, the article provides information on Stacker's policy for republishing its content under a Creative Commons License. This reflects a commitment to making data more accessible and encourages the sharing of their stories with proper attribution.
In summary, this article provides a comprehensive overview of the migration patterns from Florida to other states in 2019, backed by data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The depth of information and the systematic ranking of states make it a valuable resource for understanding demographic shifts in the United States.
