Study: 4 Texas cities have highest safety ratings in U.S. (2024)

TEXAS — Being that safety is a big concern for most when determining where to live, SmartAsset put some U.S. cities to the test to see which are the safest based on the following metrics in its 2023 study: violent crime, property crime, vehicular mortality rate, drug poisoning mortality rate and the percentage of the population engaging in excessive drinking. Out of the 200 largest cities in the U.S., Frisco, Texas, has landed as the No. 1 safest city in the nation.

While popular restaurants and shops can be convenient in a neighborhood, safety remains a primary concern.

With this in mind, SmartAsset compared 200 of the largest cities across five metrics to determine which cities in the U.S. are safest. https://t.co/6EwNBg2Dga

In fact, four out of the top five safest cities in the U.S. are in Texas. According to SmartAsset, “All four have violent crime rates lower than 90% of the cities across the study.”

Located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Frisco has placed at the top for safety its second consecutive year. Just two years ago, the city was in second-place.

In a detailed summation of data from SmartAsset, “Frisco has the fourth-lowest violent crime rate (95 crimes for every 100,000 residents) and the sixth-lowest property crime rate (901 for every 100,000 residents). Frisco and the surrounding area also averaged eight drug poisoning deaths per 100,000 residents in 2022, which ranked fourth-lowest across our study.”

Taking second place this year, McKinney, Texas, has the fifth-lowest property rate out of all the cities in the study. The city borders Frisco to the east. With 202,000 people as its population, the violent crime rate is 127 for every 100,000 people. McKinney, like Frisco, has the fourth-lowest drug poisoning mortality rate.

In third place is McAllen, Texas, which is right along the U.S.-Mexico border. “McAllen and the surrounding Hidalgo County have the second-lowest drug poisoning mortality rate (five deaths for every 100,000 residents) in our study and the seventh-lowest percentage of people engaging in excessive drinking (15.27%),” per SmartAsset. Having the 18th-lowest violent crime rate, there are 179 violent crimes for every 100,000 residents.

Plano, Texas, comes in at No. 5. It also has the fourth-lowest drug poisoning mortality rate. For every 100,000 residents, 157 violent crimes are committed — which puts it at the 17th-lowest among the other cities.

The Texas takeover in this study doesn’t stop there. Laredo (7) and El Paso (12) rank in the top 15 for safest cities in the U.S.
