Complain about phone and text scams, robocalls, and telemarketers | USAGov? ›

If you think you've received a political robocall or text that does not comply with the FCC's rules, you can file an informal complaint with the FCC at fcc.gov/complaints. If you are receiving texts that you didn't ask for, report the sender by forwarding the texts to 7726 (or "SPAM").

The national Do Not Call list protects landline and wireless phone numbers. You can register your numbers on the national Do Not Call list at no cost by calling 1-888-382-1222 (voice) or 1-866-290-4236 (TTY). You must call from the phone number you wish to register. You can also register at donotcall.gov.

Scam calls and texts

Report phone and text scams to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

If your number is disconnected and then reconnected, you might need to register your number again. You can verify that your number is on the Registry at DoNotCall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222.

The FTC continues to go after the companies and scammers behind these calls, so please report unwanted calls at donotcall.gov. If you've lost money to a scam call, tell us at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Your reports help us take action against scammers and illegal robocallers — just like we did in Operation Call It Quits.

Why am I getting spam text messages? There are many ways spammers get hold of your cell phone number so they can send SMS spam and sales texts: They may use technology to generate numbers automatically — so even if you have a brand-new number, you can still receive both robocalls and robotexts.

Getting a lot of unwanted calls would mean your number has been sold to a scammer group. Once your number is sold, it's used by all the scammers who have access to it. They try to defraud you in multiple ways by posing as professionals. Some might pretend to be from insurance agencies.

Android: How to forward a text message:

Enter the conversation then press and hold on the message bubble. Tap on the three vertical dots on the top right of your screen. Tap Forward. Input 7726 and send.

7726 is a number that most mobile customers using UK networks can text to report unwanted SMS messages or phone calls on a mobile. The number '7726' was chosen because it spells 'SPAM' on an alphanumeric phone keypad – that's a handy way of remembering it.

Listing your phone number with the Federal Trade Commission's National Do Not Call Registry can help cut down on the number of telemarketing calls you receive. But don't expect the Registry to eliminate every unwanted call. The Do Not Call Registry doesn't prevent charities or political candidates from calling you.

The FTC urges everyone to register only their own number and to never pay anyone who claims they will register your number. You—and only you—should register your phone number with the DNC List.

Complaints help the FTC and other law enforcement agencies bring scam artists to justice and put an end to unfair and misleading business practices. If you have a complaint, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

The police can do several things to help you stop the harassing text messages that you may be receiving. Keep in mind that the first thing you will need to do is file a police report which includes presenting certain evidence to prove your case.

Why am I getting spam text messages? Spam texts are both intrusive and pose a security threat. If you are getting spam texts, it's more than likely that whoever is sending you a spam text message is trying to get access to your personal information—bank accounts, passwords, social security number, online IDs and more.

If you receive a spam robocall, the best thing to do is not answer. If you answer the call, your number is considered 'good' by the scammers, even if you don't necessarily fall for the scam. They will try again because they know someone on the other side is a potential victim of fraud.

How do spam callers get your number? ›

They accumulate your data through sources like warranty cards, online purchases, even searching for number online to build a more lucrative file to sell. Here are a few examples: “800”, “888”, and “900” numbers are another way for telemarketers to obtain your phone number.

Pressing “2” may work, but more than likely it does nothing more than end the call; and you'll probably continue receiving calls.

When consumers forward a spam text message to short code 7726, which spells “SPAM” on a mobile phone, information about that spam message will be delivered to an industry-wide reporting system and to the consumer's mobile carrier.

Why do I see outgoing text to 7727? Okay so the reason for the 7727 text happens when you delete a message and report it as junk! It sends a report to t-mobile and Apple.

Go to Settings > Messages, scroll down to Message Filtering, then turn on Filter Unknown Senders. When this setting is on, you can only see messages from people who aren't in your contacts when you go to Filters > Unknown Senders.

While just receiving a spam text is an annoyance, replying or engaging with one in any way can put you in serious danger of financial fraud, identity theft, or hacking.

Don't respond to smishing messages, even to ask the sender to stop contacting you. Responding to smishing messages verifies that your phone number is active and that you are willing to open such messages, which may lead to an increase in the unsolicited text messages you receive.

Can anonymous texts be traced? Under most circ*mstances, no. Since your true phone number is not included when the message is sent, anonymous texts cannot be traced. However, law enforcement can trace anonymous texts if they are used for criminal or malicious purposes, including harassment or scams.

To deactivate, dial *87. Block your name and number from appearing on caller ID. Outgoing calls will be displayed as Private, Anonymous or Unavailable.

*70 - Call Waiting: Places your call on hold so you can answer another. *72 - Call Forwarding: Forward your call to another phone number. *77 - Anonymous Call Rejection: Blocks calls from private callers.

About Selective Call Forwarding (*63)

Selective Call Forwarding lets you program your office phone to direct incoming calls from specific phone numbers you have pre-selected to a different number - such as your cellular phone - when you're away from your office.

The FTC takes aggressive legal action to make sure telemarketers abide by the Do Not Call Registry. To date, the Commission has brought 151 enforcement actions against companies and telemarketers for Do Not Call, robocall, spoofed caller ID, and assisting and facilitating violations.

Businesses can ignore the Do Not Call Registry and call consumers anyway, however it is illegal. Generally, legitimate companies don't want to do this and adhere to the registry's guidelines. Scammers, however, often ignore the registry and call anyway.

The registry is managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency.

After you register, other types of organizations may still call you, such as charities, political groups, debt collectors and surveys. To learn more, read our FAQs. If you received an unwanted call after your number was on the National Registry for 31 days, report it to the FTC.

Telephone numbers placed on the DNC will remain on the registry, without expiration, unless the phone number is permanently disconnected and reassigned to a new consumer or you choose to remove it.

Information That Can Be Acquired from a Wire Tap

If the law enforcement officers go to your cell service provider or Google, they can access information on your text messages and emails if they have a court order.

Two text messages may be harassment. One text message and one phone call may also be harassment. Harassment can include things your abuser has said or done. The incidents could have happened recently or they could have happened months apart.
