What To Do During a Power Outage (2024)

  • Updated

If you are at home during a power outage, it is a good idea to turn off your appliances at the circuit breaker, by switching off power strips, or by unplugging power cables.

This should include all major appliances and electronics, including your HVAC system, refrigerator, electric range, computers, washer/dryer, etc.

If you are home during a power outage, taking the steps below can help prevent damage caused by spikes or flickering when power is restored.:

  1. Flip the breakers for your HVAC system and other major appliances to the OFF position.

  2. Turn off the power strips or unplug the power cables for your other electronic devices. You do not need to turn off surge protectors or disconnect devices connected to surge protectors.

  3. You do not need to do anything to the thermostat itself.

  4. When power is restored and stable (i.e. not flickering), wait 10 minutes to ensure power is stabilized and return the breakers to the ON position one at a time.

  5. Turn your power strips back on and/or reconnect power cables.

  6. Check your surge protectors and any devices connected to them to ensure they have power.
