Is it advisable to invest in mutual funds when market is down? I have been investing in SBI Long Term Equity Fund and HDFC Tax Saver Fund since one and half years.
-Mohinder Singh
The idea behind investing in equity mutual funds is to beat inflation and build a large corpus to take care of your long-term goals. You are investing in two tax saving mutual funds. Investing in tax saving funds is to save taxes and earn superior returns over a long period.
You should always keep these points in mind. This will help you to focus on your goals and take your eyes off the market. You should remember that your equity mutual funds invest in stocks. When the market is at a lower levels, you can buy more units of the scheme. When the market is at a higher level, you will get less units. When you invest regularly you will be able to average your purchase cost and get more number of units. This will help you to maximise the returns.
Thisthe investment rationale behind investing via SIPs over a long period. As fund managers say when the market is down, a sale is happening. You will get stocks at attractive valuations. If you are a long-term investor and investing in line with your goals and risk profile, you should not worry about ups and down in the market. Always remember investing regularly over long period is the only way to maximise your returns.
