A major geoeconomic event occurred in 2018 when South Korea's real GDP per capita surpassed that of Japan. By 2026, the International Monetary Fund projects that South Korea will be 12 per cent ahead of Japan.

South Korea surpassed Japan in major economic indicators over the past 30 years, but still lags behind in technological competitiveness, a report published by the Federation of Korean Industries said Thursday.

South Korea first beat Japan in this key metric back in 2018, according to the International Monetary Fund, and the gap is only expected to grow. South Korea is also expected to surpass Japan in nominal GDP per capita in 2027, according to a December estimate by the Japan Center for Economic Research.

The most significant of changes would most likely be that Korea might have stayed unified. This is because the Allied nations only split countries that were formerly under Axis control. Therefore, since Korea would not have been an Axis territory, a split would most likely have been avoided.

In 2021, South Korea's nominal gross domestic product (GDP) amounted to around 2,071 trillion South Korean won, compared to that of North Korea which was approximately 35.89 trillion South Korean won. With this, South Korea's nominal GDP was around 57 times greater than that of North Korea.
