How do I change my residence in the Netherlands? ›

Are you are moving to a new place of residence or accommodation in the Netherlands? Then you must notify the municipality of your change of address. You can notify the municipality in person, in writing and in many cases also online. You must do this 4 weeks before or no later than 5 days after you move.

You may need an authorisation for temporary stay (MVV) in addition to a residence permit. An MVV is a special visa that gives you entry to the Netherlands. You always apply for the MVV at the same time as you apply for your residence permit.

Moving to the Netherlands as a non-EU/EEA citizen is hard. You must first apply for a temporary residence permit which you must then extend for five years. After living in the Netherlands with a temporary residence permit for five years, you are then eligible to apply for a permanent residence permit.

You can apply for permanent residency after 5 years of uninterrupted legal stay in the Netherlands. There are 2 types of permanent residency: long-term residency EC, based on EU law. a permanent residence permit, based on Dutch national law.

If you want to change your nationality or add an additional one, or change your place or country of birth, gender, given name or surname, you must do this in person at one of the 19 municipalities in the Netherlands with an RNI desk. Which one you choose is up to you.

As a long-term resident in one EU country, can I live and work in a second EU country? Yes. You can stay in a second EU country for more than three months for purposes including work, study or training, if you apply for and are granted a residence permit in this second country.

If you are not correctly registered

You may receive an administrative fine of €325. You will no longer receive allowances for housing, healthcare (zorgtoeslag) or children.

If you fail to register, you risk being fined €325.

This also applies if you change your address and fail to notify the municipality on time or if you have given the incorrect address.
