What is the headline for the news article? ›

A headline is the title of a newspaper story, printed in large letters at the top of the story, especially on the front page.

Betteridge's law of headlines is an adage that states: "Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no." It is named after Ian Betteridge, a British technology journalist who wrote about it in 2009, although the principle is much older.

Question-formatted headlines are often used for linkbaiting, the practice of crafting sensational content in hopes that readers and content providers will share the content with others.

To write a successful question headline, focus on the relief that the answer to the question (i.e. your blog post) will bring to your reader. Make sure you're not asking a question that your target reader thinks they know how to answer.

Best practice: To avoid getting your head cut off, keep your web head to 8 words or fewer, according to research by The American Press Institute. But online, shorter is better. My personal preference is headlines of 6 words or less, or about 30 characters.

An ideal headline could be a mere six words and still be effective. Other studies, such as the one published in Outbrain's “How Headline Length Impacts Engagement,” states that the ideal headline is between 60 and 100 characters in length.
