DIYing Your Course Creation: A Big Waste of Time and Money (2024)

What if your desire to DIY your course is actually costing you more money than it’s saving you?

Ok, I phrased it as an innocent question, but now I’m going to make it a plain statement here (because I suspect it’s true):

Your desire to DIY your course is costing you money.

There. I said it.

But keep reading.

I’m not saying this as a Judgey McJudgerson…

Rather, I’m saying this as someone who initially built her first businesses with next to no outside help…

As someone who taught herself WordPress and built all of her websites on her own…

Me, a homeowner who is renovating a century old fixer-upper and lives in a a perpetual state of paint under her fingernails and plaster dust in her hair…

As someone who used to run a freaking DIY blog…

Like, ok? I get DIY. I love DIY. I liiiiive DIY.

But… there’s a time to do it yourself…

And there is the time to do it… with help.

If you still feel like I’m a gavel-wielding Judgey McJudgerson, hang tight. Or watch this video!

Let’s walk through this:

When you DIY your course, it’s all on YOU to figure it out.

(By definition. You’re doing it yourself.)

And anytime you fly solo, you almost always take more time to do something than if you’d had help.

(This isn’t like some CFD wisdom or anything, it’s just basic math.)

When it comes to hobbies, who cares? Half of the fun is figuring it out.

BUT when it comes to business, time is money. This is why it’s expensive to DIY your course.

So the more time we waste, inevitably, the more money we waste.

Which… is why our desire to DIY our course often costs us more money than we actually save.

Ta da!

(Again, not wisdom really, just basic math.)

Money is a renewable resource (even if it doesn’t always feel that way).

But time is not. And since time is a NONrenewable resource, wasting it is, well, a big deal.

You can’t get it back once it’s gone.

(Unless you have some Hermione Granger time-turner thing I don’t know about. And if you do have one don’t tell me. I wouldn’t be able to contain my jealousy.)

So… these are all general truths, but let me address the course creators and the soon-to-be course creators watching this:

Do you want to figure out how to have a profitable online course…

Or do you want to have a profitable online course?

The difference between those two questions is what separates serious course creators from hobbyists.

So if I’m talking to a serious course creator here – and I assume I am if you’re still watching this – then let’s be honest:

Do you want to waste time (a nonrenewable resource) and inevitably waste money continuing to try to figure something out to get what you want?

Or do you want to save time and have that thing faster?

Of course you have a high level of expertise in what you teach in your course – that’s assumed – but you may not have a high-level of expertise when it comes to marketing and launching your course.

But newsflash: You don’t need to. You don’t need that skill set. It doesn’t make you a better course creator.

And even though it’s obvious when I state it like that, I still see well-intentioned course creators struggling every. single. day. with trying to DIY their course and their marketing efforts and launch their course on their own with no help.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

You don’t have to figure out this whole list-building and marketing and launching stuff on your own. You don’t need to. It’s a waste of your time.

And by wasting your time, you aren’t becoming a better course creator. You aren’t serving your audience better. You’re not really doing anything better.

But what if you could have a proven marketing system handed to you that you could easily implement for your own course?

What if you had access to the proven methods and frameworks for validating your ideas, growing your audience, and converting your audience from leads to students?

(And what if it all came from a multimillion dollar online course company?)

That’s what I offer. That’s what I provide in my programs. That’s how I serve my students.

And I believe in it so strongly that I’ve taken things to the next level:

Beyond just creating a course in course creation, marketing, and launching, I’ve developed a whole coaching program around it.

And in case you’re new around here, that’s Launchpad: my six-month curated coaching program for serious course creators — course creators who are ready to go beyond the beta and take their course to 6- or 7-figure success — whether they’re just getting started or they’re already established.

I’m always here to help course creators, but right now I’m focusing on serious course creators…

…The serious course creators whose desire to grow their course and grow their business is greater than their desire to DIY.

If that sounds like you, I want to help you.

Crazy, wild, ostentatious success is totally possible for you and your course.

But with outside help and a proven system, it’s even more probable.
