Introduction

When you reach level 56, your class can learn their Awakening and Succession skill kits. You will specialize in just one of these skill kits, but you can swap between them as you like, don’t worry, you are not stuck with your choice forever!

The Awakening and Succession quests can be obtained from your Black Spirit, and found in your Quest Log.

  • Quest Log (O) > Main tab > Quest name: [Class] New Power

Your skills are then categorized by these 3 types:

  • Pre-awakening Skills
    • Pre-awakening skills are the skills that are available to both Succession and Awakening skill kits. These are the skills your class starts with pre-56.
  • Succession
    • Succession skills enhance your pre-awakening skills, unlocking the “Prime” versions of the skills.
    • You also gain access to a few of the Awakening skills, these are often called “C” skills, because they use hotkeys such as (C+W), (C+S), etc.
  • Awakening
    • Awakening unlocks a completely different weapon called the “Awakening” weapon and a new set of skills that use the Awakening Weapon.
    • You can swap weapons using (C), or certain skills, and will use both the pre-awakening and awakening skills, but your main damage comes from your new Awakening skills, and the pre-awakening is usually used for extra utility.
    • You also gain access to 1 “Core” skill, which adds protection or crowd control to one of your Awakening skills. You can choose between 6 different core skills.

The Shai and Archer class currently does not have a Succession skill kit because these are considered “unique” classes.

  • Archer gains access to his Awakening from level 1, but must complete his Ascension quests to be able to equip awakening weapons
  • Shai unlocks her “Talent” quests at level 56

Succession Skills

The Succession skill kit enhances your pre-awakening skills, and uses your mainhand weapon only, making it easier to play in some cases, since you don’t need to swap weapons constantly.

  • However, it is still important to use an awakening weapon and enhance it for AP, because your awakening AP still affects your succession damage.
  • If you are using the Succession kit, then 30% of your Awakening AP is still applied to the damage of Succession skills, as well as the additional item effects on the awakening weapon, such as Human/Species Damage and Accuracy.

You will then get a popup asking if you would like to use the Succession skill kit.

Succession classes use “Prime” skills to enhance the pre-awakening skills, so where possible, you want to maximize these skills.

Some skills don’t have Prime versions, so max those and use the Absolute versions instead.

  • Tip: You can quickly level skills to their maximum level by left-clicking while holding SHIFT.

Awakening Skills

The Awakening skill kit unlocks a new skill tree that uses your new Awakening Weapon. When you complete your Awakening questline, will be rewarded with a Canon Awakening weapon to get you started. If you are playing a season character, you will also get a TRI Tuvala Awakening Weapon. All classes also have access to the Dandelion Awakening Weapons, which are the next step up from Canon/Tuvala.

As an Awakening class, you will use both your awakening and pre-awakening weapons and skills.

  • Therefore, it is still important to use your mainhand weapon and enhance it for AP. Your mainhand AP also affects your awakening skills damage.
  • If you are using the Awakening kit, then 30% of your pre-awakening AP is still applied to the damage of Awakening skills, as well as the additional item effects on the awakening weapon, such as Human/Species Damage, Monster Damage, and Accuracy.

Awakening classes max their pre-awakening skills under the “Main” tab, and also all of their Awakening skills in the “Awakening” tab.

You will be able to choose 1 core skill as well at level 60 and will have a choice of 6 different options. Core skills allow you to have a protected crowd control skill of your choice since they add protection to a skill with crowd control or crowd control to a skill that has protection.

  • Tip: You can quickly level skills to their maximum level by left-clicking while holding SHIFT.

Since you will use both the Awakening and pre-awakening skills, you need to learn to swap between the different weapons. You can swap weapons using (C), and certain skills can also be used to swap between the weapons.

If a skill can be used to swap weapons, it will say so in the skill’s tooltip.

For example: Lahn’s pre-awakening skill “Fatal Attraction” says on the tooltip “Can be used via Quick Slot with your crimson glaives”. This means that if you put the skill on your hotbar, you can use the skill on the hotbar while your Awakening weapon (the Crimson Glaives) is out. This allows you to use skills from your Awakening, then the Fatal Attraction skill to swap weapons and use the skill at the same time, offering more fluid and smooth gameplay.

Should I choose Awakening or Succession?

The choice between Awakening and Succession is completely up to you and you should choose whichever playstyle you enjoy the most, or think looks the coolest. You are not tied down to one spec and can swap between the two. You can also test out both of the skill kits fully before making a choice, by creating a Trial Character and testing out the skills.

Both specs are completely viable, but on certain classes, one may perform better than the other for specific scenarios.

  • For example: Awakening Ranger may be considered a faster PVE grinder, but Succession Ranger may be better in largescale PVP.

Swapping using Skill Presets

You can switch between Awakening and Succession skills using Skill Presets.

You can unlock a Skill Preset slot with the following methods:

  • Completing your Awakening questline – talk to your black spirit afterward to obtain the Skill Prest Coupon quest.
  • Completing your Succession questline – talk to your black spirit afterward to obtain the Skill Prest Coupon quest.
  • Purchasing a Skill Preset Expansion Coupon from the Pearl Store

The first time you want to set up a Skill Preset, you may require a Secret Book of Old Moon, or Armstrong’s Skill Guide buff active. These two items allow you to change your skills as much as you’d like, and are required to change your skills if you are level 56 or higher. You get a free 1 day “Armstrong’s Skill Guide” when you complete your Awakening and Succession quests. You can also preorder the Secret Book of Old Moon from the Central Market, purchase it from the Pearl Store, or purchase it with Loyalty in the Pearl Store.

Once you have taken all of your skills, you can save a skill preset by clicking the save button in the Skill window (K).

All of your selected skills will be saved, including Rabam skills, Skill Add-ons, and your quickslot UI settings.

Next, you want to swap to the other skill spec and set up your character for the other skill tree. You can then save this using your other free Skill Preset slot.

Now that you have set up your 2 skill presets for both Awakening and Succession, you can then go to a Skill Instructor to change the preset and swap between them freely. The easiest way to do this is by going to the Battle Arena. Swapping Presets does not require a Secret Book of Old Moon, or Armstrong’s Skill Guide, but will have a 10-minute cooldown when you swap.

You can use this same trick if you would like to create a PVE-specific build, and a PVP-specific build.
