As just said, the best currency for tipping anywhere in Egypt is Egyptian Pounds. Failing that, dollar bills (or, if absolutely necessary, other hard currency notes) are used. Never tip with £1s or with any foreign coinage.

Yes, people will take other currencies, on the theory that it is better than nothing at all. Would you like it if someone you served tipped you in Moldovan Leu because that was what he had? Yes you could get it changed (I assume) but it would be a hassle. It is no different in Egypt

How pleased would you be to be paid in a foreign currency?

It does mean you have to make an effort to get hold of small notes but it soon becomes a habit.

Another vote for local currency. Still living here the amount of foreign coins still being handed over is crazy.

The easiest way to get small notes is ask chambermaids, waiters, porters etc they usually have pocket full of them.

Usually happy to get rid of them for a larger note.
