Best to tip for good service and not to receive it, and tipping in Egyptian pound is better.

Hi Nicola

As Maher has said best to tip in egyptian le, I usually tip 20le for good service from waiters and bar staff.

I tip 20le everyday to the to cleaner and this will make sure your fridge is topped up with extra goodies, etc...

Also I give 20le to the guy that brings the luggage to the room.

Totally agree with what Clint and Maher have said. Don’t use coins as staff cannot change them at the bank and have to ask other tourists to change them.

Nicola - you say "Just wondering... Previously I have been to Sharm and tipped in GBP."

Just wondering... How often have you tipped in LE, in the UK?

I tip little and often, when I think it is justified, usually staying All Inclusive, always in the local currency.

In Hurghada, a 20 LE note is usually met with a thank-you and a smile.

Enjoy

Anthony

Hi wigwam

Wait till you arrive in Egypt to exchange your sterling as you'll get a better exchange rate.

You can do this at airport ATMs or your hotel 👌🏽

It's best to convert when there. The local currency exchanges are in competition and offer excellent rates, higher than the banks.

Staff are extremely hard working and are badly paid - the equivalent of £50 per month. Out of this they send more than 50% to their families, they have to pay for shoe repair as their shoes wear out from all the walking each day during the course of their duties.

The little left over is spent on coach fares to return home when they have time off. And visits to the local cafe to watch their favourite team on the t.v.

So do tip well. I pay 40Le when I tip cleaners and staff who have done a good job while working in the heat during a twelve hour shift stacking or handing out sun beds or whatever.

They deserve a decent tip and what is 40Le? a couple of quid?.

Nicola,

I also tipped in GBP in Sharm and had no qualms about swapping a pile of coins for notes with the staff at the end of my stay. All tips were gratefully received.

I'm heading out to Hurghada for the first time this week.

Be aware on this forum that there is a "do not tip in pound coins" campaign.

I think you may identify one such person from their earlier post on this thread!

Be careful what you post on here, as this is the most poisonous TripAdvisor forum around.

Enjoy your holiday!

I take one dollars notes to use to tip staff (give a few out at a time) as they find them easier to change than pound coins which they have to change into notes etc. They really appreciate the tips and a lot of hotels pool the money which is given as tips. £1 coins cant be banked over there. Also I don't think they can take any of the plastic UK notes we have

Why not just change your £s into LE when you arrive??? Saves you losing nearly 10% in your dollar conversion

I imagine the locals will find LE MUCH easier to use

Plastic notes are accepted. In fact, someone wrote of a boat purser refusing paper £20 notes because he said only the new plastic ones were valid.

But, yes, no pound coins please.
