HANOI, Vietnam (AP) _ Bank of America opened its first branch in Vietnam today, becoming the second U.S. commercial bank to do so.

Bank of America, based in San Francisco, plans to serve international customers wanting to trade with Vietnam, finance large infrastructure projects, and do business with local companies, said Kai Nargolwala, a bank official.

It is seeking permission to open a second branch in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon.

Eleven overseas banks have opened branches in Vietnam since the country’s communist leaders opened up to foreign investors in the late 1980s.

New York-based Citibank opened a branch in Hanoi last month, the first to do so since Washington lifted its 19-year economic embargo against Vietnam a year ago.
