What is the Japanese equivalent of the S&P 500?
The Nikkei 225 Stock Average, Japan's primary stock index, tracks the behavior of 225 large JapNikkei Indexes. Like the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Nikkei 225 Stock Average is a price-weighted equity index.
The S&P Japan 500 is designed to represent the investable Japanese market. Index constituents are drawn from eligible companies listed in Japan and represent the large-, mid-, and small-cap components of the Japanese equity markets.
The S&P Asia 50 Index is a stock index of Asian stocks that is a part of the S&P Global 1200. Japan's Nikkei index gave up most of its gains to end flat on Tuesday as a rally by automakers and energy related shares was overshadowed by concerns about U.S. inflation and interest rate rises. The index inched up 0.1% to 27,943.95, after crossing the 28,000-mark for the first time since March 31.
Nikko Asset Management predicts the Nikkei 225 will rise about 16% between now and March 2020, compared to 5% for the S&P 500. John Vail, chief global strategist at Nikko Asset Management, attributes this projected outperformance to a combination of low valuations and momentum.
