1 Know your goals
Before you start reaching out to people in PE, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve from your networking efforts. Are you looking for a job, a mentor, a deal, or a referral? Having a specific goal will help you identify and prioritize the most relevant and influential contacts in your target segment, sector, or geography. It will also help you craft a compelling and personalized message that shows your interest, value proposition, and fit.

2 Do your research
Once you have a list of contacts that you want to network with, you need to do your homework and learn as much as you can about them. This includes their background, current role, portfolio, preferences, challenges, and achievements. You can use various sources, such as LinkedIn, company websites, industry reports, news articles, podcasts, and blogs, to gather relevant and up-to-date information. Understanding your contacts has become a strategic advantage, especially in Private Equity. Today's market demands personalization; that's why customizing your approach through comprehensive research is indispensable. 3 Reach out with value
The next step is to initiate contact with your target contacts and establish a rapport. You can use different channels, such as email, phone, social media, or events, depending on the context and availability of the contact. However, regardless of the medium, you need to make sure that your outreach is respectful, professional, and valuable. This means that you should introduce yourself briefly, explain why you are contacting them, highlight your common interests or connections, and offer something of value, such as a relevant insight, resource, feedback, or introduction. You should also avoid being too pushy or salesy, and instead focus on building a relationship.

4 Follow up and stay in touch
One of the most important aspects of networking in PE is to follow up and stay in touch with your contacts. This shows that you are serious, reliable, and interested in maintaining a long-term relationship. You should follow up within 24 hours after your initial contact, thank them for their time and attention, and reiterate your value proposition and goal. You should also suggest a next step, such as scheduling a call, meeting, or introduction, and agree on a timeline and action plan. To stay in touch, you should update them on your progress, share relevant news or opportunities, congratulate them on their achievements, and ask for their feedback or advice.

5 Be proactive and generous
Finally, to make a lasting impression in PE, you need to be proactive and generous in your networking. This means that you should not wait for others to contact you or offer you something, but instead take the initiative and reach out to them regularly. You should also be generous and willing to help your contacts in any way you can, such as by making introductions, providing referrals, endorsing their skills, or giving testimonials. By being proactive and generous, you will demonstrate your value, credibility, and trustworthiness, and create a positive and memorable impression in PE.

Interestingly enough I was thinking about this topic over the weekend and here it is on Monday on my screen ;)!I would agree with the points above and I would start by educating myself into the field, with courses and trainings, and in parallel I would look into my network and try to find one or two people already in the field to get the insights and best tips. And once I have it would look for the events that I can build my network, get to know few more people and learn and expand.I might even look for the ways to bring back that knowledge and contacts to my community by organising some short talks, webinars, podcasts just as I did with my YouTube channel “Making it in Austria” 3 years ago!
