Introduction

I began watching The Chosen in 2020, and I loved it. It helped me connect with Jesus on a deeper, more personal level. However, after watching the premiere episodes of season three, I am saddened to say that the creators of the show have inserted a dangerous theology about healing into the storyline.

Background

In the first season, there is a scene with one of the twelve disciples called Little James. Little James has a disability and is struggling with the fact that Jesus is healing all the people who come to Him (Matthew 12:15), but has not yet healed him when he is visibly disabled. However, Little James ends up saying that he does not want to be like those who only have faith because Jesus healed them; he wants to prove he has faith without being healed.

While it is true that some had faith before they saw healing (the bleeding woman in Luke 8:43–48), Jesus never asked anyone to prove their faith before He healed them. And there are many others who did not have faith before they saw healing (the man at the pool of Bethesda in John 5:1–15). Why did Jesus never ask (or need) anyone to prove their faith to Him before He healed them? Because Jesus had faith, and in Mark 16:17–18, He says,

“These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

All that is needed for healing to happen is just one person who has faith and believes — someone who sees with a heavenly perspective. Jesus had total faith and He carried out His Father’s will to heal all who came to Him. He came to earth as a Man and modeled a life of abundance, wholeness, and power that is possible for us.
