Vanny (2024)

Vanessa A., better known by her alter-ego Vanny, is the secondary antagonist of the Steel Wool era of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise.

She is a beta tester-turned-head security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex whose mind was affected by Glitchtrap where she would be persuaded into abducting and killing children until he awakens, similar to her predecessor. in the PizzaPlex maintenance, She would later focuses her efforts on stopping Gregory and Glamrock Freddy from disrupting her plans until she was freed from her control.

As Vanny, she is voiced by Jessica Tang in Help Wanted and the Security Breach trailer, but is voiced by Marta Svetek in the mainline Security Breach, who also voices Roxanne Wolf and Gregory. As Vanessa, she is voiced by Heather Masters, who also provides the voice of Circus Baby and Glamrock Chica.

Past[]

In her company-mandated therapy, she reveals she had a traumatic past as her father Bill forced her to lie during her parents' custody battle over her, which ended in him gaining custody of her, with implications Vanessa's mother committed suicide.

Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted[]

When she grew up, she became a beta play tester for the development of The Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience (the in-universe title of Help Wanted), during which she encountered a virus known as the Mimic, or "Glitchtrap". While she tried to stop him, she ultimately failed and ended up getting influenced by him, gaining the split personality of Vanny and brainwashed to become his loyal servant.

Coming into Power[]

Vanny and the Mimic then manipulated the system to get her the position of a security guard at Fazbear Entertainment's newly built mall, Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex. As per company policy, she had to get a psychiatric examination, but her therapists disappeared one by one each time they got close to discovering her secrets. Meanwhile, a young kid called Gregory was brainwashed by the Mimic, helping him manipulate Vanessa and killing off her therapists. Eventually, Gregory would hack the Glamrock Animatronics of the Pizzaplex into following the Mimic's commands.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach[]

Eventually Gregory would be freed from his brainwashing causing Vanny and the Mimic to order the Glamrocks to kill him. While Glamrock Chica, Montgomery Gator and Roxanne Wolf followed her commands, Glamrock Freddy did not (seemingly because he was not connected to the V.AN.N.I Network and remained in Safe Mode) and acted as a guide to help Gregory escape and survive the night until 6:00 AM.

In the true ending, the Mega Pizzaplex opens at 6:00 AM and Gregory is able to leave. However, he decides to head back in with Glamrock Freddy to confront Vanny in order to end their battle once and for all. They approach her lair, but soon find out that Vanny was aware of their plan to ambush her and waited there for them, she then uses a remote device in Fazer-Blast, ordering several automated S.T.A.F.F bots to disassemble Freddy, which is done successfully and swiftly. Gregory takes the chance of the S.T.A.F.F bots being distracted to get to her lair.

Vanny is not present in her lair as she is roaming around Fazerblast in search of Gregory, but there is an arcade machine named Princess Quest 3. After Gregory completes the game, the Mimic's control over the entire Pizzaplex is neutralized due to having unclear connections with the Princess Quest games. The vicious S.T.A.F.F. Bots are shut down before irreparable damage is dealt to Glamrock Freddy, but only his head remains functional. Most importantly, Vanessa is completely freed from the Mimic's influence, and her bunny mask is left behind on the floor.

Gregory, carrying Freddy's head in a bag, meets up with Vanessa waiting for him at the exit, no longer possessed. The end credits shot shows all three of them having ice cream together watching the sunrise, where Vanessa presumably might've adopted Gregory and/or became his legal guardian.

Other Endings[]

Disassembled Ending[]

The same events as the True Ending play out up until Gregory reaches the control room. However, this time, Vanny comes in and approaches Gregory. Panicked, he grabs the same remote Vanny used to destroy Freddy, and issues a new command to the S.T.A.F.F bots: Disassemble Vanny. The staff bots immediately turn away from their previous victim, and rapidly head up to the control room. Vanny has only a few seconds to be terrified before the bots brutally rip her into pieces (off-screen). Gregory leaves the gruesome scene behind to meet with the heavily-damaged Freddy, who gives him one last word of encouragement "You are my superstar..." before shutting down for good.

Rooftop Ending[]

In one of the three two-star endings, Gregory and Glamrock Freddy decide to stay after the Pizzaplex closes and destroy it once and for all by setting the whole place on fire. However, when Gregory opens the emergency exit door, he is confronted by Vanny on the rooftop. Before she can harm him, Freddy moves in. Previously, Vanny was unable to be seen by him, most likely due to his original eyes not being connected to the Neural Network. However, Freddy has been upgraded with Roxanne Wolf's eyes at this point, which allows him to see her as she was connected to the Network.

He sacrifices himself by tackling Vanny off the rooftop and going down with her. Gregory rushes down a fire escape with the hope that Freddy survived the fall. Gregory realizes that he's far too late after just one look at Freddy's sparking motionless body. However, he notices Vanny's corpse lying on the ground and decides to unmask her out of curiosity. To his shock, however, he is revealed that Vanessa was under the mask the entire time and is overwhelmed with confusion and shock. Though it is not shown, Gregory presumably runs away from the Pizzaplex after this.

During the post-credit scene, Vanessa stands on the burning rooftop. She looks down in a combination of horror and sadness, as the cutscene ends. It is unknown if this was her spirit or something else as it is yet to be confirmed.

Burntrap Ending[]

Though she is not physically seen, Vanny is pivotally important in this ending. In it, Gregory and Freddy stay in the Pizzaplex after the doors open and make their way below the foundations. They find an abandoned previous location that the Pizzaplex was built over - which was the setting of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, the sixth game in the series - and end up in its basem*nt. Once there, a recharge station opens to reveal "Burntrap" - a result of the Mimic copying William Afton's "Springtrap" persona. The basem*nt has a hideout inside of it, featuring a mattress, miscellaneous decorations, and Vanny's name and graffiti on the wall.

After a short battle with Gregory and attempting to take control of Freddy, the abandoned restaurant ignites in a blazing inferno. Gregory and Freddy run away and escape the Pizzaplex, and Burntrap attempts to do the same, but Tangle, an amalgamation of various animatronics, takes the chance to break through the collapsing ceiling and drag Burntrap up into it. Vanny's fate remains unknown, but it is presumed that she escaped the fire, possibly still under the Mimic's control.

Bad Ending[]

After the Pizzaplex's doors open at 6:00 AM, Gregory decides to immediately make a run for it and leave the place behind. He runs into a nearby alley, hiding and sleeping in a cardboard box. He uses a newspaper as his blanket, which says that multiple people are continuing to disappear from the Pizzaplex. In this close-up shot, Vanny's shadow covers the floor, her silhouette holding a knife, heavily implying that she finally achieved her goal of murdering Gregory.

Five Nights At Freddy's VR: Help Wanted 2[]

Vanny is seen in the secret ending after the protagonist completes Princess Quest. The protagonist would find themselves in a skill crane machine surrounded by plush versions of every character in the game and observed by Vanny. She sends Moon to claim the Glitchtrap plush with the Protagonist giving the plush to him and Moon bringing the plush to Vanny. The plush reverts itself to Glitchtrap in moments before she clasping her hands together with Glitchtrap inside, either teleporting him somewhere or killing him. Vanny then glances at the protagonist and waves at them before leaving.

Ruin[]

Following the events of Security Breach, Vanessa and Gregory went deep into the Pizza Place below the Pizzaplex. They find the Mimic in its sealed-off room from the epilogues and presumably were the ones to create the M.X.E.S. program that would keep it imprisoned and prevent anyone from letting it free (it's not entirely confirmed if they were the ones that actually created it).

While Vanny is never physically seen in-game, the main character Cassie obtains Vanny's mask from the base game Security Breach which allows her to see the AR realm of the Pizzaplex. The design of the mask, coupled with the fact that M.X.E.S is visible in the AR realm, might imply that Vanessa created it.

She is also seen on footage in the AR realm of the theater as an easter egg where Cassie sees the footage of Gregory being chased by Vanny then complains about her wearing the mask.

Vanessa makes a brief cameo in the Brazil Ending, as a hologram eating ice cream alongside Gregory and Helpy while wearing just a checkered red shirt and blue jeans looking at the sunset which drove Cassie to the point of insanity.

Security Breach: Fury's Rage[]

Vanny serves as the final boss in this short beat-em-up spin-off, being fought at the end of the fourth level, a factory. She is the only enemy in the game with a ranged attack, throwing knives from a distance. In Hard Mode, however, she is no longer the final boss, as it adds one more boss fought right after her.

Appearance[]

Vanessa has a white complexion with freckles on her face. She has long blonde hair tied in a ponytail, apple green irises, olive pupils, and glossy peach lips. She wears a plain white security guard uniform, with black shoulder pads. She also has a dark gray cap and pants.

As Vanny, Vanessa wears a rabbit suit. The suit is mostly white, but it has patches and stitches all over made of differently colored and patterned fabrics of grey and black. She wears a creepy rabbit mask with a big unsettling smile on it, The mask has large red eyes that glow in the dark along with a dark blue ribbon tied around her neck as an accessory.

Personality[]

As Vanessa, she shows herself as bossy and has a somewhat rude attitude while at work, treating Freddy like a subordinate and problem to her and even intimidating Gregory to convince him to stop hiding. However, she appears shyer and more reserved in her personal life, barely talking during her therapy sessions (which are seen only as VHS audio recordings in Security Breach) and never answering Luis' proposal of getting coffee together despite claiming to find him nice.

As Vanny, she's psychotic and murderous, dancing and skipping around, attempting to kill Gregory while constantly repeating "Are you having fun yet?" as well as giggling in children's laughter as an added uncanny feature. She has an almost-playful sad*stic personality, as evidenced by the quote. She has very childlike sad*stic attributes (very similarly to Glitchtrap).

In her interactions with the Mimic, she acts submissively and always promises to follow its orders. It's also strongly implied that she is actually scared of it and is not embracing its commands fully willingly. After Gregory frees her from its control in the Savior Ending, she shows immense gratitude and friendliness towards him.

• Opening the teaser of Glamrock Freddy with Vanny in the background with notepad reveals that the image is called "Shadow of Vanny". This revealed that Vanny was the follower's name.

• Vanny is the first and only female serial killer in the series.
• It is possible that Vanny isn't the only follower, as Jeremy had a "Halloween mask" next to him as one of the tapes say, and Tape Girl instructs us to do something that will save Glitchtrap, and not kill him. It was later revealed with the line that Jeremy also had 'ink' covering his body. It is a high chance that the 'mask' was actually Jeremy's face which he had sliced off with a paper guillotine.
  • That said, it's more likely Tape Girl's "instructions" of defeating Glitchtrap were actually just Glitchtrap mimicking her.
• Vanny's identity was revealed to be Vanessa before the game even released, due to Funko leaking it through their advertisem*nts of Vanny merch after the trailer dropped.
• "Are you having fun yet?" is Vanny's catchphrase, similar to Afton's catchphrase being "I always come back".
• Vanny has murdered approximately 9 children at the Pizzaplex and possibly several employee workers at the Pizzaplex if she was controlled.
• It is a popular meme in the fandom that Vanny has a crush on Glitchtrap. This went so far to become an actual theory.
• Her username, Nessie97, may hint that she was born in 1997. However, one could argue since that since Five Nights at Freddy's 3 and Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator are speculated to take place in 2023, and that Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted takes place several years after the events of those two games, it would mean that Vanny is in her 30's.
  • However, leaked emails from Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery state her age as being 23 years old. This would mean that she was likely born somewhere in the 2000's (early 2010's at the maximum) as Help Wanted takes place several years after Pizzeria Simulator. If that's the case, the "97" in her username might refer to the month and day of her birth, but that's not confirmed.
• Vanny is the first living human antagonist that appears outside of minigames.
  • She is also the first human antagonist shown in full form rather than 8-bit, not counting William's corpse Springtrap.
  • She is also the second main antagonist that is still a living human by the time of the game, with the first being Michael Afton.
  • However, counting William's book counterpart, she's the second and third antagonist respectively.
• Considering it being abbreviated as the letter A, it's possible that Vanessa's last name is "Afton", and therefore she is somehow related to the Afton Family, and due to her young age and the general structure of the timeline, it's possible she could be Afton's (grand) niece or granddaughter. However, the granddaughter option isn't very likely, given that the only of Afton's children who lived to adulthood was Michael Afton, but due to being a living corpse with no organs, he couldn't have been able to have children. However, after Dittophobia revealed that the events of Sister Location happen after the first game, it's entirely possible that Michael could have had the chance of having children prior to being scooped by Ennard.
• Some fans started speculating that her father, who she refers to as Bill, is actually none other than William Afton himself, as Bill is a shorthand for William. However, this creates a plot hole, as Vanessa was born at the very earliest in the early 2000's, at a time where William had presumably already died inside Spring Bonnie and turned into Springtrap. Although, technically speaking Afton could have died later than was originally assumed meaning his awakening took place in 2015, 30 years after the Missing Children disappeared. Also, Vanessa's movie counterpart is revealed to be Willam's daughter. It's unknown if, like Michael not being related to William, this is a creative freedom Blumhouse took with the character or if it's actually meant to reflect her status as an Afton in the games universe.

• Vanny is the fourth human character in the franchise to have merchandise based on her, the other three being the 8-bit McFarlane toys of William Afton, Michael Afton, and the Crying Child/Bite Victim.
  • She's the only one of the four that isn't 8-bit.
• As mentioned by her therapist, Vanessa has anxiety.
• It's unknown whether the mask in Ruin is meant to be the same mask she wore in Security Breach or if it's a different mask, as the design of the mask is the one from Help Wanted (however, redesigns are common in FNaF, so it could still be the same mask from Security Breach just with a newer design).
  • Vanny briefly makes a minor appearance in Ruin, where she can be seen in old camera footage of the Pizzaplex on the Daycare Theater's big screen chasing after Gregory (Cassie comments on Vanny wearing the same mask that she is wearing, which presumably confirms the mask Cassie is using is the same one Vanny used in Security Breach).
• Vanessa shares some similarities and somewhat counterpart with Elizabeth Afton:
  • Both had abusive and manipulative fathers.
  • Both trying to make their fathers proud. Elizabeth tried make William proud while possessed and under evil program influence of Circus Baby, where as Vanessa forced made her abusive father proud by telling lies about her mother.
  • Both had been corrupted in their perspective story. Elizabeth corrupted after been possessed Circus Baby under animatronic evil influence, while Vanessa corrupted after been brainwashed by the Mimic.
  • Both were freed in the end. Henry put Elizabeth soul to rest in Pizzeria Simulator true ending, where as Vanessa freed by Gregory in Security Breach true ending.
• Due to the overhaul done to Security Breach 6 months before release, numerous scenes and aspects of Vanny and Vanessa were cut or overhauled, including Vanessa playing a way less antagonistic role and being more worried about Gregory's safety which can still be seen in her therapy tapes, numerous scenes, as well as dialogue still found in the game files and an alternate Vanny jumpscare showcased in the trailer, a cut mechanic called the Vanny meter where if the player spent to long in a room Vanny would appear, numerous cut animations of Vanny moving around and even doing cartwheels, and Vanny originally weilding a kitchen knife as shown in some of the early artwork and merchandise.
