What does it mean to be Caribbean? How does one negotiate their Caribbean-ness? Is one still Caribbean despite not being born in the Caribbean?
The Caribbean is home to people from a plethora of racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds – Blacks, Whites, Indians, Chinese, Lebanese, Syrian, etc. Yet the dominant image that most people typically affiliate with the Caribbean identity is one of African origin.
Caribbean identity is complex and multi-layered influenced by the various ways people arrived to the Caribbean— through the transatlantic slave trade, indentureship, refuge, etc. With this migration people brought their origin histories, traditions, and culture to create the beautiful mosaic of the Caribbean.
In this discussion, we hope to unpack Caribbean identity in relation to race, culture and geography, through story-telling and much more. will be explored in this virtual conversation.
