University of Bedfordshire ranked 'worst in the UK' (2024)

The University of Bedfordshire has been ranked the worst in the UK by the Complete University Guide.

In the 2022 rankings, Beds Uni was ranked 130th out of 130 UK universities - a drop by seven places from the previous year.

The university had the lowest degree completion rate in the UK by quite some margin - at just 53 per cent.

This is compared to the University of Suffolk in second-last place which has a completion rate of 65 per cent.

The Times Higher Education rankings also rank the university based in Bedford and Luton, Bedfordshire joint 83rd out of the 101 universities it rated.

This is in the third-worst level possible with other universities ranking joint 83rd, 94th and with the University of Chester in last place at 101st.

The Complete University Guide rated Beds University 50 per cent on entry standards and 66 per cent on graduate prospects.

It was rated 79 per cent on student satisfaction and 59 per cent on academic services spend. The uni was rated 63 per cent on research quality and 27 per cent on research intensity.

Bedfordshire University also has the highest student to staff ratio in the UK with 23.5 members of staff per student.

Comparatively, the neighbouring University of Hertfordshire - which used to compete against the University of Bedfordshire in annual Varsity sports competitions - was rated 83rd in the country with a degree completion rate of 82 per cent.

A spokesperson from the University of Bedfordshire told Luton Today that they were disappointed at their position but added "we are aware that league tables tend to use data which is not reflective of our student body".

They added that their strategy showcases an ambition to put "disadvantaged and non-traditional students at the heart of Bedfordshire".

They said that the rankings don't take into account the "inspirational research" done by the university.
