While many folks are settling into their autumn routines and mourning the loss of their long summer weekends, the furthest thing from everyone’s mine is traveling.

However, now is the time to sneak in some last minute getaways before prices skyrocket come those pesky holidays! By making trips in the off season, you not only save on airfare, but can stick to a tight budget at a time when hotels are offering their cheapest prices.

These are my favorite places to soak up all-things-pumpkin for a long weekend when you’re looking for adventure in autumn!

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

A bustling summer escape, Cape Cod is a haven for beach goers. However, don’t let the cooler air deter you from visiting the gem on the northeast coast. If you live in this region, skip the airfare and take a drive to the cape to view some of the most magnificent foliage in the region. If choosing to fly, check out Expedia’s current deals on flights to the seaside. Take part in their annual cranberry celebration or indulge yourself in some of the freshest seafood at OysterFest. Many of the events are free to attend and beach homes drop their prices significantly for those looking to rent in the off season. To save even more, Home Away let’s you find comfortable housing in prime locations within your budget!

Finger Lakes, New York

To save even more on an autumn getaway, look outside of major cities and aim for a less popular location. By avoiding urban areas, you can take advantage of lower cost bed and breakfasts and save big on discounted wine tours. Now that the summer crowd has dispersed, most companies are more than willing to accommodate your budget to make sure their still getting customers during this in-between time.

New Orleans, Louisiana

If you’re hoping to get in one last hurrah before you pull that parka out, New Orleans is the place to do it. Despite comfortable fall temperatures and lively activities year round, prices drop in this spunky city in the fall since you’re not hitting a prime holiday (re: Mardi Gras). Find a hotel deal or book an AirBnB (referral link) in the French Quarter where you can access most of the attractions by foot, saving you a hefty cab bill after a night of enjoying the fine cuisine and strong beverages. For more ideas, check out Groupon for discounts from jazz ferries to historical tours.

San Francisco, California

With tourists long gone and free activities galore, San Francisco is a hidden hot spot this time of year. This city is filled with free things to do, from visiting Golden Gate Park, strolling across the famous bridge, meandering around Fisherman’s Wharf and climbing Twin Peaks for a superb city view, San Francisco is easy to love without spending a single penny. If you don’t mind mingling with others, couch surfing is typically the cheapest way to stay. If you’d prefer a more personal accommodation, Trivago allows you to see the best deals on local hotels.

Acadia National Park, Maine

A personal favorite, Acadia National Park located on the eastern shore of Maine is my go-to place for the outdoor lover. For only $25, you’ll have access to all the incredible sights in this landmark for seven days. While staying in Bar Harbor, a quaint down just outside the park, is a viable option, you can also save some pennies by choosing one of the many adorable towns along the main highway. Phippsburgs and Boothbay are both on the water but are far less expensive than more touristy towns. Even further, skip the hotel all together and go for a campsite! You’ll pay a small fee for use of the land but will truly get to embrace nature’s finest. Make sure you check the park’s website for their current special deals!

Which season to you travel the most in? Do you think you’ll travel this far?

Due to my work schedule, I tend to have longer summer breaks and schedule most of my travels during that time. However, this year I’m being a little friendlier to my wallet without compromising my wanderlust by taking trips in the off season. Many of the sites and activities are still accessible and the cheap flights are worth the getaway!

While I don’t think traveling this fall is going to work, each of these places look wonderful! And I always love to travel on the off seasons to stretch the budget a bit more. Thanks for the suggestions!

The Finger Lakes and Acadia are two of my favorite go to spots? Make sure to pack a coat, not a jacket, for Maine this time of year! San Francisco is on my to see list. Might have to look at tickets…

These all look beautiful! We aren’t travelling this fall, but we are planning a trip for the Spring before we have to move for my hubby’s residency.

SF is such a wonderful city! I was amazed at how many amazing things there are to do there that are completely free, like you said. Great advice regarding place to stay because those hotels are ridiculously expensive!
