Critics Consensus

While it may hold few surprises for fans of the source material, The Sandman's first season satisfyingly adapts an allegedly unfilmable classic.

The Sandman: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Mónica Marie Zorrilla Inverse Neil Gaiman’s vision and narrative have been masterfully adapted. The devotion and care is palpable in the finished product. This ten-part series is at its best when it veers away from its lead (and often shoddy CGI) and focuses on other characters and story arcs, particularly those involving David Thewlis... Aug 26, 2022 Full Review The Sandman: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Jeff Beck The Blu Spot The first season of The Sandman is a stunning adaptation of Neil Gaiman's acclaimed graphic novel series that faithfully brings to life its multitude of eccentric characters & the first few captivating storylines. Stephen H Loved this series. It has definitely inspired me to pick up the graphic novels and give them a read. I was previously unaware that the show was based off of graphic novels and comics, but apparently the show follows them quite closely. Excited for season 2. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/24 Full Review Jasper M Very weird but extremely entertaining and unpredictable. Especially the performances of Sturridge, Holbrook and Thewlis make this series worth watching. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/02/24 Full Review Red1 Started out well! I liked the casting and the premise was interesting. It just got boring. I assumed the whole series would be his quest to retrieve his relics but that story line was cleared up quickly. It then was a procession of stores about characters that had little to do with the main character, while also being plodding and boring. Maybe the original comic is boring too, but seems like a great opportunity to make something more if that is the case. Snore. If there is a season two, I wont bother to watch. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/14/24 Full Review Maira S I watched all of it just fine. But then it came the episode of the cats. Oh man. I lost everything there. 7 minutes in and I was crying my soul out, WHY NEIL GAIMAN WHY???? 😭😭😭 That said, I love this series, the tone, the themes, I don't know, there's something about it that I can't exactly pin down what it is that makes it special, maybe whimsical. Sooo great. Also Morpheus is gorgeous I kinda fangirl over him lol Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review Beatrice B I was shocked by the lack of plot. The pace seemed incredibly slow to me. I managed to make it until the sixth episode, in which absolutely nothing happens, and finally I gave up. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/27/23 Full Review John H I enjoyed it, the first episode was pretty strong and it got worse over time and a bit campy. I really loved the animated last episode about the cats though!I will probably watch another season if it happens.
