The average person spends more than 8 hours a day using technology, study says (2024)

We’re all constantly plugged in. We work on computers, we watch TV and we scroll through our phones. A new Sleep Judge survey found that on average, people spend 8.6 hours a day using technology.

The Sleep Judge study surveyed 997 respondents between the ages of 18 and 87. Gen Xers used technology 8.8 hours each day. Millennials’ usage was 8.7 hours a day and baby boomers reported using technology 8.3 hours a day.

Out of the people surveyed, 77% said they used their cellphones just before bed.

The problem with this, according to the Sleep Judge study, is that people who watched video apps like YouTube or Netflix took almost 28 extra minutes to fall asleep after turning off their device.

The study also found those who watched the news before falling asleep were the most likely to have trouble sleeping.

The survey found that on average, people who didn’t watch the news before bedtime got 20 more minutes of sleep than those who did. According to the study, the networks most likely to keep people awake were PBS, CNN and Fox News.

The news never sleeps, but that doesn’t mean you should, either. Experts say people should get anywhere fromseven to nine hours of sleep every nightto maintain physical and mental health.
