Texas has been named the fastest-growing state in the U.S., according to data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau.

According to the report, Texas added 470,708 people between July 1, 2021, and July 1, 2022. The total state population is now 30,029,572.

Texas joins California as the only states with a resident population above 30 million.

Population growth was fueled by net domestic migration (230,961), net international migration (118,614) and natural increase (118,159), according to the study.

After a historically low rate of change in 2020 and 2021, the U.S. population increased by 1,256,003 to 333,287,557 in 2022.

“There was a sizeable uptick in population growth last year compared to the prior year’s historically low increase,” Kristie Wilder, a demographer in the population division at the Census Bureau, said in the report. “A rebound in net international migration, coupled with thelargestyear-over-year increase in total births since 2007, is behind this increase.”

The study is from the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program. The analysis looked at current data on births, deaths and migrations to calculate population change.

In 2023, the Census Bureau will release estimates of the 2022 populations for counties, cities, towns, metropolitan and micropolitan areas.
