Swapping Faces, Inspiring Nightmares, Immortality: The Sandman's Many Powers (2024)

This post contains spoilers for Season One of The Sandman.

Morpheus is one of the most powerful beings in the universe by the end of The Sandman's debut season on Netflix, and it's all thanks to the King of Dream's ability to rule over our subconscious minds. He's also immortal—as are his other six family members, Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, and Destruction.

As Spider-Man's Uncle Ben would say, "with great power, comes great responsibility." And Morpheus certainly loves talking about his sense of duty and the weight of ruling his dream kingdom, but what can this powerful being actually do when he's putting out fires in the waking world? Read on for a full breakdown of the Sandman's powers. And get ready to wait it out for The Sandman Season Two.

Morpheus Can Enter Your Dreams

Just because Morpheus can pick around in your mind while you sleep doesn't mean he's going to murder you like Freddy Krueger. The King of Dreams is there to help protect you in the subconscious realm, known as The Dreaming. Morpheus is such a pouty, emo guy, that he most likely won't even bother you unless you're in danger. Like Neo in The Matrix, he has complete control over The Dreaming. He can do whatever he wants in there, change your dreams, and even come and go as he pleases.

Special Tools Enhance His Powers

Heroes like Batman may be known for their utility belts, but he's not the only one with an enviable took kit. When Sandman is in possession of his pouch of sand, he can put people to sleep or take the ability to sleep away from them forever. He has a magical helm that helps him travel throughout The Dreaming, and he also imbued a ruby with the power to blur dreams and reality. (His black trench coat and makeup may not give him any special abilities per se, but it's another moody vibe that proves Dream and Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne would be such good friends.)

The King of Dreams Has Many Different Appearances

Along with his many names, Morpheus, a.k.a. Dream, also possesses many different faces. Depending on whom he is speaking with, Dream can appear how we see him for most of the series (as actor Tom Sturridge) or as a totally different persona. When speaking with a woman named Nada in Hell, his entire being changes into Lord Kai'ckul, the Dream Lord of a fictional African tribe from The Sandman comics.

Morpheus Can Create Dreams and Nightmares

To aid your experience in The Dreaming, Morpheus can create dreams to ease your mind or scary nightmares to teach you a lesson. Fiddler's Green, a dream of a wonderful, luscious garden paradise, helps Dream by protecting Rose Walker. Gault, a shape-shifting nightmare, is later recreated to be an inspiring dream. However, not all of Morpheus's creations are so pleasant. He also created a nightmare known as The Corinthian to be a black mirror for humanity. But after escaping into the waking world, The Corinthian became a serial killer.

Does The Sandman Have Any Weaknesses?

Like many tragic heroes, Dream often falls prey to love. His sibling, Desire, often uses Dream's search for everlasting romance to try and destroy him, but Dream has been able to prevent his latest attempts. Desire and Despair are cooking up a new plan to torture the King of Dreams at the end of Season One, however, as is Lucifer down in Hell.
