Some of you may have seen us take a trip back to the cinema last year for the anniversary release of the first movie, now with Scream (2022) out in cinemas, we checked our Scream in 4DX at Cineworld and thanks to it being National Popcorn Day, Cineworld gave Unlimited Card Members some free popcorn to enjoy.

The latest movie in the popular franchise brings back many of the original cast in a film that doesn’t change the rules and certainly pokes fun at itself, there were times when I expected a break in the fourth wall.

It’s now twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. Neve Campbell (“Sidney Prescott”), Courteney Cox (“Gale Weathers”) and David Arquette (“Dewey Riley”) return to their iconic roles in Scream alongside Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.

If you have seen any of the Scream movies then you know what you are in for and the latest in the franchise follows the guidelines of the franchise and the “STAB” movies, this time around we are introduced to some new cast and a couple of nicely played twists that work well for the content.

It’s great to see Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette returning to Woodsboro for this fifth outing and it kind of took me back to the first time I saw the first film back in 1996, with a similar excitement for a movie that has twists, turns, plenty of blood flowing to keep any slasher movie fan happy.

As I mentioned the film doesn’t miss the chance to poke fun at itself and there are some great moments including the new cast talking about “requels” and how the horror genre plays out in the “meta” world that we now live in. It’s true the horror genre has changed a fair bit over the last 25 years and it is great to see Scream (2022) harkening back to those classic days of a good slasher movie such as Halloween, Friday the 13th and of course Wes Craven’s original Scream movie, it was great to see a tribute to Wes to show appreciation for what he started with the movies.

I did enjoy the new additions to the cast and the connection that they have to the franchise, they all seemed to work well for the story arc and with the addition of the Campbel, Cox and Arquette it pulls everything together for, possibly, one last trip to the silver screen for Ghostface.

Scream (2022) is very much a “requel” and it works, there are plenty of those jump-scare moments that you know are coming, but you still jump and with the 4DX you don’t just jump you get tossed around in your seat to make you even more unnerved.

Scream 5 the 4DX Experience

So yes I opted to see Scream (2022) in 4DX certainly has you feeling like you are part of the film, right from the start we get slight movements from the seats, such as the vibrations as the phone rings. As the film progresses the 4DX is more intense, we get the fans kicking in to give us a feeling we are outside in the streets of Woodsboro as well as slight hints of smells wafting around.

When it comes to Ghostface’s horrific and violent kills we get the full-on effect of the 4DX seat movements as we are thrown around as if we are also being attacked by the masks killer, Scream in 4DX has been one of the most active films that I have seen for a while, we even get the pokes in the back with the stabbings on the screen.

I’m not sure if the 4DX helped me enjoy Scream 5 more than I normally would, although I am a fan of the franchise, the 4DX certainly built up the experience of seeing the film on the big screen, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett done a great job with the fifth movie, but whether or not the franchise should carry on or not is now really down to the box office.

Scream (2022) is an enjoyable horror/slasher, the 4DX certainly adds to the cinema-going experience and it’s great to see a movie with an 18 certificate instead of a horror with a 15, this isn’t going to be a film for everyone, but if you like the Scream movies then it’s worth checking out and if you want that extra bit of madness then see Scream (2022) in 4DX.
