What do you do with sandbags after a hurricane in Florida? ›

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, with most storms occurring between mid-August and late October. Spread sand on lawns or landscape beds. Place the empty bags in your garbage bin (do not place the bags in your recycling bin).

If the used sandbags are not contaminated with foul water, chemicals, or petroleum products, rake the sand into soil, add it to planters, or use it for flowerbeds as a soil amendment. Place the empty bags in trash cans if you choose not to reuse them. Do not place the empty sandbags in the recycle bin.

Sand or sandbags that have come into contact with only precipitation, but not floodwater, are normally considered to be not contaminated and can be reused without restriction as long as blowing sand and blowing litter from sandbags is prevented.

For disposal, those bags can be emptied of sand and placed in the green waste bins designated for organic materials. Burlap bags last two to six months in sunlight before biodegrading and becoming a part of the natural environment again.

Many people use sandbags to protect properties from flood and wind damage during a flood or hurricane. During these natural disasters, sewage, oil, septic waste, and lawn chemicals spread to the bags, making them less safe. Contaminants will break down the bag's structure and spread diseases if you keep or reuse them.

Only broken sandbags on the outside of sandbag walls need to be replaced. Sandbags that are broken but are inside of a sandbag wall can remain in place. Flood mitigation should be continuous with no gaps.

Sandbags should not be reused if they have been in contact with floodwater. Contact your local Township or City Office for advice on how you can dispose of contaminated sandbags. If keeping a stock of sandbags, be aware that they can rot if left wet and damp – store them in a dry place out of the sun.

How long do sandbags last? Burlap sandbags can last up to 8 months to a year; direct sunlight can deteriorate sandbags quickly (shortens lifespan by months).

If your sandbags were not contaminated with foul water, chemicals or petroleum products, you can use them for something else. Public works experts suggest using the sand for raking into soil, adding to planters or using as a soil amendment for flowerbeds. Place empty bags in the trash.

When the water has receded, separate your sandbags, lay them out or stand them up and let them dry out thoroughly. Once dry, store them for use again. Wet sandbags will rot or deteriorate quickly.

How do you remove sandbags? ›

Place them in the sun and allow them to dry out so that you can use them again in other flood-related situations. If your bags have deteriorated or started to leak, the sand can be placed into new bags or spread on landscape beds. Empty them by dumping sand in your backyard and putting bags in the black landfill bin.

Sandbags deteriorate when exposed for several months to continued wetting and drying. If bags are placed too early, they may not be effective when needed. If it is necessary that bags remain durable for a longer time, the addition of cement can increase effective life.

Place the sandbags OUTSIDE and against the doors where water enters your home. Garage: If water comes into your garage, sandbags should be directly against the access door into your home for support (Figure 1). Garages can withstand low flooding with less damage than the interior of your home.
