Salaries for Commercial Actors (2024)

All actors interpret scripts for audiences by using speech and movement under the guidance of a director. Commercial actors appear in media to persuade viewers to buy goods and services. Their minimum salaries are determined by the joint union of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Contracts are valid as of 2016.

Principals

Salaries for commercial actors are paid per production and depend on a complex combination of program type, number of performers, media, coverage and number of uses. For example, principals refer to actors who are the focus of the effort. They might have several lines of dialog or could appear silently by themselves with a product. Rates begin at $671.69 for rehearsal and filming and go down to $124.64 each time the commercial is shown from four to 13 times. Commercials filmed for the highest level or programming in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles grant a salary of $2,191.09, as of publication.

Groups

For rehearsal and filming, those appearing on camera in groups of three to five individuals get $491.72 per person. In groups of six to eight, each actor receives $435.38, and in groups of nine or more, each person gets $360. Pay for the fourth through the 13th use of each commercial is $107.61 for three to five people, $96.82 for six to eight and $79.34 for nine or more. Rates for the highest level of programming in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles run $1,640.85 for three to five individuals, $1,404.27 for six to eight and $1,147.79 for nine or more.

Internet

Principals who appear in commercials made exclusively for the Internet receive a flat fee of $1007.54 for pieces that show more than eight weeks, or $2,518.84 for those shown more than a year. Groups for the Internet commercials more than eight weeks are paid $737.58 per person for three to five individuals, $653.07 for six to eight and $540.00 for nine or more. If the showings run more than a year, the fees go up to $1,843.95 per person for three to five, $1,632.68 for six to eight and $1,350.00 for nine or more.

Extras and Hand Models

Commercial actors who appear in scenes where their faces are unrecognizable, such as part of a crowd, are considered extras who receive a flat fee regardless of market or program type. Each receives $366.37 for commercials with unlimited use, or $212.66 for commercials with 13-week runs. Showings beyond the negotiated times are paid at an extra $274.29. Hand models are actors whose hands are the only body parts that appear in the commercial with products such as hand lotions. They receive $559.02 for unlimited use productions or $371.83 for 13-weeks posts. Extensions beyond these time periods get $402.96.
