In season two, there's an uncharacteristically soft moment between John and Beth regarding Rip and his roles on the ranch, as well as in the family. In the finale of season two, John gives Beth a letter that says he accepts Rip as a son and that he's also gifting Rip a house on the ranch.

In real life, the Derby, Montana property is the Chief Joseph Ranch, and a couple of the cabins are available to rent. Visitors can choose between the Ben Cook Cabin, which many viewers will recognize as Rip's refuge in the first season, and The Fisherman's Cabin, which Lee Dutton occupied during season one.

Things are good with Rip and Beth, who got married in an impromptu ceremony in the season four finale and who open season five playing their version of house. As part of last season's sweeping attack on the Dutton family, Rip's Yellowstone cabin was burned down.

However, this can also be applied to the respect of the other Yellowstone employees who all witnessed Kayce take on, and beat, the ranch's most formidable wrangler. By letting the boss' son beat him, Rip selflessly pushes his pride aside to help signify to the others that there has been a change of the guard.

After Rip killed Rowdy in a fight, John and Lloyd helped cover it up by delivering Rowdy to the Train Station. That night, Rip was given the choice to commit to the Ranch as his home forever and take the brand, and he accepted.

"[Rip] doesn't know any of that, and she's protecting him," she concluded. "So there's a weighted burden in her heart that she cannot share with him. He's trying to reassure her and love her, but he doesn't know the truth."

Anyway, Beth made a beeline for Rip to read him the amendment, in which John called him, in essence, a son and gave him a house on Yellowstone.

John Dutton took in the orphan no questions asked in return for him taking the brand to swear his loyalty, and Rip has become his most loyal enforcer, the unrelenting foreman of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch and unwavering protector of his darkest secrets.

The Yellowstone Ranch would then continue to remain in the Dutton family, while also possibly being annexed into the reservation. Costner's departure may spoil that possibility, but not if the McConaughey sequel-spinoff continues whatever plot is left unfinished from the end of Yellowstone.
