The following information regarding residence and citizenship was obtained from the Algerian Embassy in Ottawa on 23 January 1990:

1) Permanent residence per se does not exist in Algeria, however foreigners may reside temporarily on a long term basis, depending on particular reasons or motives. In the case of a foreigner being married to an Algerian citizen, the foreign spouse may request permission to reside in Algeria. If permission is granted, the spouse will be given residency status for a 2 or 3 year term, renewable at the end of each term. The foreign spouse may request to be naturalized after residing in Algeria for a period of 7 years, although this period could vary.

2) An Algerian citizen does not lose his/her Algerian citizenship by the mere act of marrying a foreigner. There apparently is a decree which states conditions for losing Algerian citizenship, however the embassy official has never read it nor has he seen it.

3) Implicitly, Algeria recognizes dual citizenship in that it does not investigate whether an Algerian citizen has obtain other nationalities, however this has not been explicitely written down in any official manner.
