Quickbooks - anyone know what happens when you don't continue the subscription.? (2024)

Needs answer

Amazing - I;m in a chat for 15 minutes trying to get the answer to 'Desktop pro plus is an annual subscription. What happens after using it for a year? You just lose the ability to sync with banks (we don't use that anyway). or you can't enter new data? Or the program won't work.'

Anyone know the answer with this new 2022 version?

I know over the years they have tried squeezing more money out of people - the last few versions you could buy, but would allow syncing with banks for 3 years. I know businesses running 5+ year old versions fine because they don't sync with banks. But they'd also sell a subscription.

It seems they are subscription only now? Does the program stop working if you don't continue the subscription?

  • The new version of QuickBooks is subscription based. That means it will stop working if you don't renew your subscription.

We're an accounting firm here and we're recommending to a lot of our clients to buy the 2020 version. If you don't use QuickBooks for payroll then you can continue to use this version for as long as you like or until it won't work under a newer version of Windows, etc.

This is Intuit's way of trying to force people to use QuickBooks online.

It will stop getting updates and access to Support, Payroll Services, Online Banking and Online Backup. You will still have the Quickbooks Company Files but you will need to get a stand-alone license to keep working on Quickbooks without a subscription.

Thanks! I certainly don't mean to shoot the messenger with this!

@jeffbrubaker you mention the program will stop working - won't even open to let you see data?! That's like ransomware! Not just losing updates and bank sync? or read only? A Holes!

Would you know if 2020 Desktop Pro is still available new? or a struggle to find / getting bought up because of this (is 2021 subscription only also that you didn't mention that year?)

I remember there were 2 versions a couple / few years ago. 1 was subscription for a year that was less than buying the product and get 3 years of connections? But after 3 years, the subscription was more.

    dbeato

I like your answer more... but where's the stand alone license? Why not buy that to start with : ) ??

And that link you posted... the QB person says 'You can still access the file'

Access it... does that mean I can write new data? I could read that sentence to mean I can access it to only read the data. (I am jaded but sometimes it's justified) I can ACCESS the files on a CD and DVD. But I might not be able to write / continue to add to the disk.

    They make it soo hard.

From what I can see, the last perpetual license version of quickbooks is 2021.

Any other sources you know of besides here?:

    https://www.trustedtechteam.com/collections/intuit/intuit-quickbooks-windows Opens a new window

For companies with single / maybe 2 users, it's cheaper to go with these perpetuals.

    with 3, subscription I think pays - it includes 3 / 5 users?

    That company seems legit:

    https://www.sitejabber.com/reviews/trustedtechteam.com Opens a new window

    https://www.resellerratings.com/store/Trusted_Tech_Team Opens a new window

Thoughts? Would you get perpetual for single users to lower the cost for those that just buy / use software. They don't need their support (my experience with most companies, and especially QB - script readers that have no clue). They woudl turn to me for problem solving and other users on the web are better than support for most any help : )

Don't need updates? The program has been out for loads of years. They aren't adding any really useful new features. And likely all the bugs they'd fix in 2021 are already fixed? And they don't need bank sync.

The Intuit link posted by dbeato above says that's not the case. Everything functions with the exception of payroll updates, online banking and online backup.

So while it's sold as subscription, it's no different than the previous sales model with the exceptions noted.

    Thanks, but....

As usual, intuit makes it hard to know what's going on. dbeato 's link takes you to a page with intuit workers answering questions. one says you can 'access' the file'. That's vague. is that Access to just read it? Access to edit / add things? Doesn't say. But then there's SEVERAL links to other pages about discontinuation. Reminds me of the cliche - if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with Bullsh_t. I could follow those links and try to read those. and invariablly, there'll be links to other pages.

Perfect example of why support from them is worthless ; )

    dbeato also mentions:

You will still have the Quickbooks Company Files but you will need to get a stand-alone license to keep working on Quickbooks without a subscription

then you are back to just buying the perpetual license to start, since in a year, you certainly can't find a stand alone license. and without the license? I would bet I can ACCESS the current data. But can't change it or add more, kinda likejeffbrubaker said. Both guys here are right.

I did follow a link from that link that dbeato posted. It says:

Once your service is canceled, you'll no longer be able to:

[I removed things about not getting access to 'services']

You'll lose your license to use the QuickBooks Desktop Software. Though you'll no longer have access to the software and all related services, you'll retain access to your company data file stored on your device, which can be reinstated to a readable QuickBooks Desktop format upon reactivation of your subscription or with the purchase of a license to the software.

They don't sell licenses to the software other than the subscription model.

From what I am seeing, when the subscription ends - you can't add / edit data.

And I do think, based on 'you retain acess to the data.... which can be reinstated [when you pay us more money].' means ransomware.

F them for locking the data and F them for making it so hard to get answers!

This thread may be old, but I just got hit with this. Quickbooks Pro 2021 will not run at all without a current subscription. I get a message that my subscription has lapsed and offered to restart my subscription.

Spent quite a bit of time in chat with two different "support" people. The only option is to restore to my last version and data file and then re-enter all transactions since then. This would be over a year's worth of transactions.

In other words, "give us money if you ever want to see your data again".

This is borderline, if not outright criminal. Definitely ransomeware.

I will say, they locked our company out of the file, and we had to upgrade. They know you have data and will pay to get back in. I do think it is extortion.

  • I'm not sure about what happens when a subscription is canceled either. I played the game for two years. My sub expires in a week. Not gonna do it again for a single-user desktop license - $350/year billable every year into perpetuity. I'm gonna see what happens. I think I will lose the ability to download the latest version (2022) and services. If you look at the chart below, I believe it says one may continue to use the product and perform all the normal QB functions in the company file. If they have a way of preventing me from using the currently installed DT product, I will migrate to ZoHo books -https://home.zoho.com/home Opens a new window.

So sorry for you guys! Yes, they are weasels!

As others above mentioned / recommended, get 2020 (at this point, I think ebay and similar are the only options) and get past their scam. Although 2020 won't be able to open data used in newer verrsion.

You likely can see about exporting from the 2021 and import into 2020. Likely will lose stuff. And at this point if subscription ended, you have to find someoen else still using 2021 to open the data to export it.

    Weasels!

  • johncriswell2 - I can tell you what will happen because I was in exactly your position just a couple months ago. No matter what Intuit/Quickbooks says, I was completely locked out of my data until I paid the US$350 subscription fee - i.e. ransom. I talked with a couple different support techs on the phone and they confirmed this.

I too have decided I don’t want to pay the annual subscription, I dont need the additions from their network. The only thing I have used was online invoice and payments which isn’t a big load. However it is the pits to have to re do a whole year of work to downgrade to an older version, has anyone found an easier fix to import my work a year?

  • Intuit is unbelievable. I have 2020 Pro desktop version, do daily backups , all of a sudden I started getting message that there are errors in my company file and data may be corrupted if I keep using it, tried rebuild/restore , QB file doctor, still the issue persists. Called their support, and was told that I need to pay $1000 for them to take a look at the errors that their own software is generating, oh and you need to subscribe to a new version because my 2020 version is "ancient". So let's see your own software causes errors/issues when it saves the company file, then you get an extortion message from QB that you need to fix errors caused by QB and get told you need to pay $1000 and switch to subscription. No thanks, I was looking to change my accounting software anyway, good time to do so.
