Question on genuine Soviet era watches (2024)

Marty,

In the case of Vostok watches, anything you find that's 100 percent original and says CCCP on the dial is going to be from the Soviet era. They kept using the Soviet-era parts after the USSR broke up, so you might see a 1992 or 1993 watch with CCCP on the dial and a Russian movement, or vice versa, but Vostok changed to Russia for new production right after the break-up.

There are many Vostok watches that have the tanks, ships and rockets on them from the Soviet era. In fact, most of the classic Komandirskie designs began in the USSR. The ones that were made back then will say "Сделано в СССР" on the dial. I think the KGB watch was strictly a tourist piece created after the break-up, but it may have come out in the last days of the USSR. I've never seen one that says anything other than Russia, though.

The Soviet Union actually broke up on 26 December 1991, not in 1989. You're confusing the Berlin Wall with the end of the USSR. It stumbled along for another two years before the break-up.

The hammer and sickle still gets used, along with the red star, because it's popular. There's a demand for USSR-themed stuff. No other reason.

The only watchmaker I know of that kept marking any stuff as "Сделано в СССР" after using up old stock was Raketa. They kept making some watches with CCCP on them at least up to a few years ago.

Watches made in Europe that use the Vostok name are easy to tell from Russian Vostok watches. The watches you refer to are Vostok-Europe watches, made in Lithuania. Many of their models use Vostok movements from Russia. I'm not into V-E watches, but they do make some attractive, high-quality pieces.
