NHS Band 5 roles include Registered Nurses for Acute & Community or Mental Health and Learning Disability services, midwifery or any other specialty in the NHS. A newly qualified midwife salary is Band 5. Band 5 is the entry Band for a person who has studied for 3 years to become a Nurse. To gain this qualification people need to go to a University and gain the Registered Nurse Qualification and also hold a current professional registration. This professional registration is an additional fee to be paid by the individual. This is managed by the NMC (Nursing Midwifery Council) who increased the fee to £120 a year in February 2015. We also have net pay calculations for a part time Band 5.

Other Band 5 roles include various administration roles, which do not always require a qualification or professional registration. Examples include Project Officers, Caseworkers, Coordinators, Technicians, Clincial Audit Facilitators, Data Analysts and many more.

Band 5 - 1st pay point

(£28,407 per annum)

From 1st April 2023 (with the 5% NHS pay rise offered), the annual salary for a Band 5 on the 1st pay point will be £28,407. This is £2,367.25 a month before deductions. A person on this NHS pay point will pay £158.31 a month of National Insurance, £208.32 a month NHS Pension contributions and £222.29 a month Tax. This makes their net (take home) pay £1,778.34 a month.

The 5% NHS pay rise has increased this pay point from £27,055 to £28,407 a year. This is a total increase of £1,352 a year (£0,113 a month). From 1st April 2023 the new NHS net take home pay will be £1,778 a month (£48.82 more due to the NHS 5% pay rise).

This is based on 8.8% pension rate because earnings are higher than £28,224 and lower than £29,179.99 a year. The Income Tax rate is 20% for any earnings between £12,570. and £50,270 a year. The National Insurance (NI) rate is 12% for earnings between £1,048.01 and £4,189 a month.

The percentage of NHS net pay received (take home pay) compared to the entire salary is 75%. This means (overall) that for every £1 earned, .75 pence is kept and .25 pence is deducted.

If a person on this band was promoted (or went up) from a Band 5 on the 1st pay point to a Band 5 on the 2nd pay point they would earn an extra £92.96 a month after all deductions (and £186.00 altogether).

Band 5 - 2nd pay point

(£30,639 per annum)

From 1st April 2023 (with the 5% NHS pay rise offered), the annual salary for a Band 5 on the 2nd pay point will be £30,639. This is £2,553.25 a month before deductions. A person on this NHS pay point will pay £180.63 a month of National Insurance, £250.22 a month NHS Pension contributions and £251.11 a month Tax. This makes their net (take home) pay £1,871.30 a month.

The 5% NHS pay rise has increased this pay point from £29,180 to £30,639 a year. This is a total increase of £1,459 a year (£0,122 a month). From 1st April 2023 the new NHS net take home pay will be £1,871 a month (£73.13 more due to the NHS 5% pay rise).

The 5% NHS pay rise has increased this pay point from £32,934 to £34,580 a year. This is a total increase of £1,646 a year (£0,137 a month). From 1st April 2023 the new NHS net take home pay will be £2,069 a month (£82.50 more due to the NHS 5% pay rise).

Please Note

Tax is calculated after Pension contributions have been taken away. This means that someone may not earn enough (after pension contributions have been taken away) to be in the 20%, 40% or 45% tax bracket.
