As an expat, there are two kinds of medical check-up you need to know about: Health screening to identify common diseases, and pre-insurance medical examinations.

Preventive health screening

Germany has one of the world’s most advanced screening programs for common diseases – the charges for basic, statutory screening are covered by all health insurance providers as standard, whether public or private. That includes:

  1. Full body check-up – every 3 to 10 years for over 35s, depending on personal risk level
  2. Breast cancer screening – every year for women aged 30 and over
  3. Skin cancer screening – every 2 years for men over 30 and women over 35
  4. Glaucoma test – every 3 years for over 40s

Benefits of private health insurance (PKV)

All public and private health insurance policies cover the cost of certain types of screening at minimum intervals – they are required to do so by law.

However, private health insurance often goes further. For example, at ottonova we have removed the age restrictions for statutory health screening and exclude screening costs from your annual deductible.

Private insurance medical examinations

Before you can register with a private health insurance (PKV) provider in Germany, you have to undergo a medical examination. The purpose is to assess your level of risk; ultimately, all insurance providers have a duty to protect their collective of policyholders. People with high-risk or complex conditions will likely have to use the public insurance system or pay a surcharge.

This examination usually includes:

  • Taking a complete medical history, including details about your family
  • Measuring your blood pressure
  • Performing a series of tests on a blood sample (also called a hemogram)

FAQ

The process to get your finalized contract typically takes from an hour to 14 days. It depends on the individual case. You first have to submit an application for a tariff (including answers regarding your health status). After we checked your application you will receive your final contract.

If you have questions, feel free to book a non-binding consultation. Our sales team is happy to assist you during that process.

Under the private health insurance system, every family member needs their own individual policy, and the cost (premium) is calculated based on each person's health and age when they enroll. Because of this, children's premiums are typically quite affordable. To insure your children in private health insurance can have a lot of advantages.
