What is the aerodrome Manual of Standards? ›

This manual contains all the aerodrome rules, mandatory standards, procedures and guidance information relating to the planning, design and operation of aerodromes. These standards replace the Rules and Practices for Aerodromes (RPA).

2.1 The aerodrome manual is a fundamental requirement of the certification process. It contains all the pertinent information concerning the aerodrome site, facilities, services, equipment, operating procedures, organization and management including the safety management system.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) creates regulations for aviation safety, security, efficiency and regularity and environmental protection. The organization also regulates operating practices and procedures covering the technical field of aviation.

The ICAO Annex 14 sets out the fundamental Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) for airport design and operations, which States undertake to apply through national legislation.

AERODROME- A defined area on land or water (including any buildings, installations and equipment) intended to be used either wholly or in part for the arrival, departure, and movement of aircraft.

It is a small airfield with just basic facilities. The term aerodrome is popular in Britain and Britain ruled countries. An airport is an aerodrome with extended facilities. The facilities include those for the passengers and the aircraft in terms of parking, maintenance, repair, hangar etc.

2.2 Purpose and scope

1 The aerodrome manual is required to contain, or refer to, all necessary information that enables the safe use, operation and maintenance of the aerodrome, including the obstacle limitation surfaces and any other matters, mandated by the Part 139 (Aerodromes) Manual of Standards (MOS).

Aircraft pilots are taught to follow a list of critical steps if they become lost while in flight: Confess, Climb, Conserve, Communicate, and Comply. Often referred to as the “Lost 5 C's,” some variations add a sixth tag word like “Circle” (in order to take better stock of one's exact location).

While IATA codes specifically support the airline travel industry, ICAO codes more broadly support international flight operations regardless of the type of operation (to include general and business aviation).

This Annex contains Standards and Recommended Practices (specifications) that prescribe the physical characteristics and obstacle limitation surfaces to be provided for at aerodromes, and certain facilities and technical services normally provided at an aerodrome.

Airport Certification Manual

The ACM is a written document that details how the airport operator will comply with the requirements of Part 139.

During a thorough certification process, aerodrome regulators and operators verify that the aerodrome's facilities, design, equipment and operational procedures comply with relevant SARPs, thereby ensuring safe operations and supporting optimization of aerodrome capacity and efficiency.

​The ICAO Aviation Security Manual (Doc 8973 – Restricted) assists Member States in implementing Annex 17 to the Chicago Convention by providing guidance on how to apply its Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).

It has two 'elements', the first is a numeric code based on the Reference Field Length for which there are four categories and the second is letter code based on a combination of aircraft wingspan and outer main gear wheel span.
