How to Make Money on Fiverr (The Ultimate Guide) (2024)

One of the biggest problems with taking on a side hustle is finding jobs to do. When you have a marketable skill, it’s only worth something if you have a place to market it. That’s why Fiverr has become a solution for a number of people. Here is how to make money on Fiverr.

How to Make Money on Fiverr (The Ultimate Guide) (1)

What is Fiverr?

Fiverr tags itself as a “Freelance Services Marketplace for Businesses” and that’s what it is.

Fiverr provides freelancers with a place to advertise their services. Businesses can browse the services and then decide which freelancer to hire based on the price, the skill level and the work needed.

How Does Fiverr Work?

Setting up an account on Fiverr is easy and best of all, it’s free.

You have to be registered on Fiverr in order to buy or sell so it’s very important that you’re prepared with an email address that you check frequently.

Once you have set up an account, you’ll be asked to create your gigs. Most sellers on Fiverr offer what’s called “Gig Packages” which is a collection of services that they offer for one price.

Your gigs are the most important part of your Fiverr account because they’re what determine whether you have work or not.

Fiverr Jobs (also known as gigs)

When you want to decide what jobs to create for Fiverr, you have plenty to choose from. That’s good because it means if you have a skill, you’re likely to be able to post on Fiverr.

Categories include:

  • Business
  • Digital Marketing
  • Graphic & Design
  • Lifestyle
  • Music & Audio
  • Programming & Tech
  • Video & Animation
  • Writing & Translation

Within those, there are hundreds of subcategories. Like I said, something for everyone.

Fiverr Seller

As a seller on Fiverr, you’ll choose your gigs and then put them in a jobs category. Creating a gig requires you to decide what work you’re offering and how much that will cost the buyer.

The Fiverr Seller Help Center says, “The best sellers don’t leave room for misunderstandings.” It suggests that you make sure your gigs are written well and accurately describe the service that you’ll provide.

The last thing you want is confusion between you and the buyer.

If you need help creating a gig on Fiverr, there’s a complete walkthrough here.

Fiverr Fees

Like all sites that help you make money through a side hustle, Fiverr makes money by taking a cut of your money.

When someone hires you for a gig, Fiverr collects the final fee from that buyer. It’s held in an escrow account while you complete the work. When the work is done and submitted, Fiverr releases the money to you less a 20% fee. That means, if you do a gig for $100, you receive $80 and Fiverr keeps $20 as a fee.

You have to keep the fee in mind when you’re creating your gigs on Fiverr. If you post a $5 gig and it takes you an hour to do, you’re going to receive $4 from Fiverr on the backend. You need to decide if $4/hour is worth your time to do the work.

If it is, go to town. If it’s not, then you need to re-evaluate your gigs.

Making Money on Fiverr

Once you’ve decided what gigs you’re offering and how much you’re charging for each gig, you need to get people to buy those gigs.

Posting is one thing, making a sale is another.

Know Your Worth

Just about every blog you read talking about making money on Fiverr will tell you not to waste your time on the little jobs. If you truly want to make money that’s worth your time, then you need to know your worth.

If you’re a writer, getting paid a penny a word probably isn’t worth your time. Believe in yourself, charge what you’re worth and you’ll be happy with the work you do.

Make a Gig Video

How to Make Money on Fiverr (The Ultimate Guide) (4)

According to Fiverr’s data, a brief, high-quality video can increase your orders by over 200%. A gig video is a video that outlines what services you have to offer. If you need a place to start, Fiverr has a video on how to create a great gig video using your smartphone.

You can find it here.

Stand Out in the Crowd

If you’re a graphic designer, don’t look like all those other bland graphic designers who show off the logos they made for a local accounting firm, do something crazy, creative or show-stopping to attract attention. You want people to take notice of you.

Another way to stand out in a crowd is to offer a service that other people don’t. This one is tough because a lot of Fiverr users have overlapping skills, but if you can do something no one else can, market it.

SEO is Important

Like all things, SEO plays its part in getting you noticed. Your gig title doesn’t just grab the buyer’s attention; it also grabs Fiverr’s attention.

Fiverr suggests that you, “Using a consistent keyword in your Gig title, description and tags will help improve your search ranking on Fiverr. Additionally, creating a username with a phrase or word related to your area of expertise will reinforce your Gig to a potential buyer. Use the repetition of keywords to your advantage.”

Include Awesome Samples

A buyer wants to know what they’re getting before they click that buy button. Samples are the best way to show the buyer why you’re the best choice for the job. Make sure your profile includes great samples and that those samples are always updated with your best work.

If you’ve done work in the past, ask previous clients if you can use that awesome work as part of your portfolio. Always get permission before you put something in your portfolio.

Fiverr Seller Levels

Fiverr vs. Upwork

There are a few ways to compare Fiverr to one of its closest competitors, Upwork.

The first has to do with the fee structure. Fiverr has a flat fee structure. For every job you complete, you pay 20% of that fee to Fiverr. Period.

The Upwork fee structure is tiered depending on how much work you do for a client. You will be charged 20% for the first $500 of work you do. After that, you’ll be charged 10% up to $10,000. Once you do more than $10,000 of work for a client, you’ll be charged 5% for all subsequent projects.

The other difference between the two platforms is how you get work. Fiverr, you list your services and clients choose the seller they like the best. On Upwork, it’s reversed. Clients list the jobs they need to be completed and service providers bid on the jobs. Clients choose the worker based on the bids they receive.

For Upwork, there’s another fee to consider. Freelancers buy credits called connects and use those connects to bid on projects. Once the connects are used up, a freelancer must buy more connects to start bidding on projects again.

What’s Better Fiverr or Upwork?

The truth is you can’t compare Fiverr and Upwork because they work differently. Some people will have established themselves on Fiverr and they make money. Others will have established themselves on Upwork and they make money. Still, others will use both platforms and make money.

One is not inherently better than the other, so it will be up to you to decide which platform works best for you as a freelancer.
