How to Give God All the Control (2024)

How do we give God control? It’s a challenge many Christians face in their spiritual walk.

Are you a Type-A Personality?

I am.

It’s a gift and a challenge all in one.

If you’re unsure of what a Type-A Personality is, I love Wikipedia’s definition:

Ambitious, rigidly organized, highly status conscious, sensitive, truthful, impatient, always try to help others, take on more than they can handle, want other people to get to the point, proactive, and obsessed with time management. People with Type A personalities are often high-achieving “workaholics” who multi-task, push themselves with deadlines, and hate both delays and ambivalence.

Sounds kind of good, right?

The problem is, following God can be a challenge if you have this kind of personality. Thankfully God knows your heart and your weaknesses as much as your strengths! He wants you to trust Him!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him,and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)

Want to give God control? Here are some tips on how to let go of control and truly hand your life over to God! #faith Click To Tweet

HOW DO WE GIVE GOD CONTROL?

It seems like a silly question, doesn’t it? Because when it comes down to it, God IS in control of everything. BUT we often try to assert our own control and defy or disobey Him. Here are some ways to relinquish that control and enrich your relationship with God.

TALK TO HIM.

God wants to spend time with you. Spend time talking to Him. Talk openly and freely about everything. Let Him know that you’re struggling to let go of control and invite Him to help you.

READ THE BIBLE.

When you read scripture, you get to know God. It only makes sense that the more you know someone, the more you learn their character. It’s easier to trust God when we know Him!

LISTEN TO HIM.

The Lord speaks to us. However, it’s important that we listen to what he has to say.God hasbeen giving me some REALLY loud messages lately. Here is one such example of Him speaking so clearly to me about the topic of control….

I went to the bookstore with a previously used gift card. I was certain the balance remaining on the gift card was somewhere around $17. There I stood in the Christian section of the store. I recently read Not a Fan by Kyle Idleman, I was working on the Beth Moore prayer devotional, Whispers of Hope, but I wanted another book that would encourage growth in my Christian walk.

So I stood there with two books in my hands. I read both of the book jackets and felt torn as to which one to choose. I debated and deliberated. Then I felt a sudden strong urge to buy one.

I went to the till to purchase the book. The cashier rang it through… $17.31.

Then she scanned my gift card.

I literally saw her jaw drop.

The amount on the gift card was EXACTLY $17.31. She was floored and said she has never seen that happen before… EVER!

I knew in that moment I had selected the right book. I knew that God wanted me to read that book and He was making it clear to me that I made the right choice.

The book is entitled Let. It. Go. by Karen Ehman.
How to Give God All the Control (3)How to Give God All the Control (4)
It is about “how to stop running the show (letting go of control) and start walking in faith”.

How to Give God All the Control (5)

Remember how a couple months ago I declared that I’m All In with God? I’m still struggling with handing everythingover to Him. There are still bits and pieces that I want to control.

In the first chapter of this book, you are required to take a test about control. I was so unhappy with my results that I wanted to take the test again. That in itself tells me that I need to read this book!

THANK HIM.

The Lord is so good. Even if you struggle with control, approach God with a thankful heart.

Show gratitude for all He’s done for you.

It’s easier to release control when you’re thankful for what someone has done for you. Even if it’s the small things that you wouldn’t be able to control… thank Him. For example, you can thank Him for the rainy day because that means you get to stay inside and read instead of doing the gardening.

DO YOU STRUGGLE TO GIVE GOD CONTROL?

God loves you and He wants to help you! Through scripture, prayer, a listening ear, and a thankful heart, you can have victory over your need to control. As you hand more over to Him, you will find peace and clarity on God’s will for your life. He promises it!

What a wonderful post! We are Tao cultivators in our family and letting go is definitely at the center of our practice. Often times, trying to control things is holding on to things that we “believe” we can control when in fact, they could slip from our fingers at any moment. I had to learn that very quickly when I became a mother. I had So MANY plans… things we would do, things we would say, feel… and so full-of-myself, thinking that my child would turn out a certain way! Yeah… I quickly learned that being a parent meant letting go! yesterday is gone, tomorrow hasn’t happened, only today exists. :-) Thank you for that inspirational post…

On a querky note : I saw GST on your receipt! Which part of Canada are you in? I’m in Quebec City. :-)

I really enjoyed reading this blog. I have always had a hard time letting go and letting God take over control. I am a mom of two adult kids my son is 23 and my daughter is 22. They both have a rare genetic I disorder RP. I know God is our healer. He has show me the power of his healing in myself. God is so good. But I continue to hold onto control for the salvation of my kids. They are not searching for God and if anything my daughter wants to hear nothing about him. And that really hurts because I really want to see them both come to Christ. Friends of mine came over to visit and ended up sharing the gospel with both my kids my son ended up getting baptized. But I wasn’t feeling joy because that time of baptism seemed more forced and felt wrong. And my son back it from that he made the choice to be baptized but to walk out in faith he was not ready for. He didn’t know God he heard the gospel. So now I have to let God finish the work that was started in here and I’ll try to work it out myself because only God can work out all the details of our salvation. I was getting dreams and visions and I believed that one of my kids was getting baptized and my son did but in my own stubbornness to try to think that I could help him further along wasn’t working. God gave me revelation that I cannot go before him he does the work and he will finish it. I really enjoyed this post thank you so much. God knows every little detail . If there’s one thing he keeps telling me that I need to rest in him I need to trust in him. I am also a Canadian to I live in Ontario😊

You see, we just finished our last batch of small group study about “Navigating Your Finances God’s Way” on Sunday and next Sunday will be graduation day.
The first thing we learned was letting God in control of our life. This is a very subject for Christians as well as non Christians. This small group study actually started from US. 🙏

Hello, I so much understand about your journey and the darkness. It’s so hard when you love god. I truly love people and often get hurt by others. Letting go is hard, but really when the fight is to hard. You got trust God and let him fight for you. I know that things do get better. So many times it’s been hard in my life. God gets us through this. I felt doomed I never felt so unloved and deserted. But truth is god never left he was with me the whole time. I believe people deserve to be forgiven. Satan and people drove me crazy. I know good smells when I could smell that it was god. I almost died it was horrible but I got a chance to really understand why it was worth it, because I love my family, friends and god so very much. God is so special and beautiful. He is that. I wish sometimes life would have been different, but I gotta let it go and give to him. I pray anyone who is being attacked for god’s grace and devine healing. To get satan out of our lives.
