Sails and Rigging
The standard Gulf 32 is cutter rigged with a club-footed staysail. The present owner has chosen to remove the staysail and sail the Gulf 32as a sloop with a Genoa. However, he has equipped the staysail stay witha forestay release lever, so the stay normally can be stowed out of theway of the Genoa but rigged quickly to use the staysail as a storm jibwithout the club footed boom. However, the boom and associated hardwarecan be easily reinstalled and will go with the boat.

The mast, booms and spreaders are all aluminum. The main boomhas a fixed gooseneck and a masthead boom lift. The standing riggingand chain plates are stainless steel.

The mainsail sheet is led to a mid-boom Harken traveler allowing easysail trim adjustments and leaving the spacious co*ckpit free of the mainsheet.

The loose-footed main with its patented “ZipStop” furler (patents heldby North Sails) provides a unique way to “raise and lower” the main. Asleeve is sewn into the luff of the main. By pulling on a set of controllines, the sail is stuffed into the sleeve as the sleeve is zipped shutalong the luff. Pulling the control lines the other way unzips the sleeve, releasing the main. By coordinating the release of the clew outhaul, themain can be furled or unfurled on any point of sail, even going down wind. All control lines are led aft to the co*ckpit. Since the Genoa is rollerfurled, both main and jib can be handled without leaving the co*ckpit. Sincethe anchor windlass is also controlled from the co*ckpit, RAINBOW can besingle-handed easily.
