Gjallarhorn in Destiny 2: How to Get It?

If you want to know how to unlock Gjallarhorn in Destiny 2, first off, remember that you cannot get this Rocket Launcher as a random drop like most of Exotic weapons. You will not find it within Xur’s rotation or loot it from an Exotic engram, you will have to do more than that to get this weapon. The thing is that to get the Gjallarhorn Rocket Launcher you will need to complete the “And Out Fly the Wolves” quest, which will become available for you after completing Dares of Eternity on any difficulty. You will be able to get the Gjallarhorn Destiny 2 quest from Xur in the Treasure Hoard.

IMPORTANT NOTE: At SkyCoach, you can also Buy Destiny 2 Boost at the lowest prices and with the fastest delivery. You can make your first purchase even CHEAPER if you find our special PROMO CODE (highlighted in green) hidden in this article and get a 20% DISCOUNT.

Note that if you do not have the Bungie 30th Anniversary DLC you will not be able to complete the “And Out Fly the Wolves” quest and thus get the Gjallarhorn Rocket Launcher.

One of the most difficult parts of this quest is the Grasp of Avarice dungeon completion. We strongly recommend you to have at least one good friend in your team, to help you complete the dungeon. While Grasp of Avarice is not the most difficult dungeon in the game, completing it alone, while actually possible, will definitely take a lot of time and skill. Here are a few useful tips on how to do that:

  1. Gear yourself up. Get as many damage resistance mods to your armor and try to maximize the Resilience characteristic;
  2. Optimize your build. If you have low survivability try to use Void subclass with abilities which gives you the Devour effect;
  3. Play it safe. Remember, this is a dungeon, not a raid, and here you have unlimited damage dealing phases;
  4. Think about weaponry. If you are a new player and do not yet have meta-weapons, then Xenophage can be a good option for you. Try to get this weapon before your Grasp of Avarice run.

After you successfully complete the dungeon the other parts of the quest can be easily completed solo. Some people may experience some problems with getting x7 Wolfpack Rounds. We recommend farming Exodus Garden 2A Lost Sector on Cosmodrome to get them quickly. There is no guaranteed drop of Wolfpack Rounds, so it can take several attempts.

After you collect all required Wolfpack Rounds you will need to complete the Lost Sector one more time and then receive your Gjallarhorn from Shaw Han.

Unlike Destiny 1, where Gjallarhorn was a random reward and players spend months to get it, in Destiny 2 it can take less than a day to add this unique Exotic to your collection. However, we cannot call getting this old-school weapon easy as you will need to complete the dungeon, which will take time on either finding a team or fight your way through the encounters solo. And even after that you will not get the most powerful version of this weapon because Gjallarhorn, as any other Exotic in the game, has a Catalyst.

Gjallarhorn Catalyst: How to Get It and What It Does?

To get the Gjallarhorn Exotic Catalyst you will need to go back to the Grasp of Avarice dungeon. There will be no need to complete the dungeon fully, because you will be able to meet the requirements for the Catalyst before the last boss. BLOG20

Your task here is to find 3 Secret Chests scattered across the dungeon. However, you will not be able to open them as a regular chest, you will need a special buff you can get from Reaver Vandals to access the insides of those secret chests. Reaver Vandals will drop the buff in a form of fake engrams if you deal enough damage to them. Simply grab those engrams and run for the nearest secret chest.

Once you open the third secret chest and finally receive the Exotic Catalyst, you will then need to kill 400 enemies using Gjallarhorn to get the Catalyst’s bonuses.

While the Catalyst will buff your Wolfpack Rounds perk, increasing the amount, speed and damage of your missiles upon killing, this is mostly for clearing out waves of small enemies. The main advantage you are going to have from Gjallarhorn Catalyst, which will significantly boost your burst damage and DPS, is an additional rocket in the magazine. Unlike, for example, the Clown Cartridge, with the Catalyst you will always have 2 rockets in the magazine, which will significantly increase your damage over a period of time.

When compared to other Catalysts in the game, this one is perhaps the most unique. Such a significant DPS boost along with great AoE potential makes Gjallarhorn a really great choice for almost any PVE encounter in the game. So, getting the Gjallarhorn Catalyst is well worth the effort.

Is Gjallarhorn the Best Rocket Launcher?

Well, there have been plenty of Gjallarhorn in Destiny 2 talk on Reddit recently, so, this question is apparently what players are concerned about. Let us put it this way: despite Gjallarhorn dealing less damage now (which did make this weapon less popular) it is impossible to say whether this rocket launcher is completely unusable in the current meta. And we doubt that it ever will become unusable. The only possible scenario in which Gjallarhorn can become completely unpopular is if the Pack Hunter perk, the one that makes this weapon very helpful in any PVE scenario, gets reworked.

The thing is that the Pack Hunter perk is more helpful to your teammates than you. When firing Gjallarhorn the allies around you can also use Wolfpack Rounds (which essentially are an upgraded version of cluster bombs) in their legendary rocket launchers. So, your allies will deal significantly more damage just because you are using Gjallarhorn.

Today Gjallarhorn is a very team-based support weapon, which can provide damage bonuses no other weapon in the game can. Just like Divinity, such a weapon is more than welcome in any good team, however, there is no point having more than one Gjallarhorn in a team, because there are legendary rocket launchers which will deal more damage.

What are the best analogs of Gjallarhorn?

If there already is Gjallarhorn in your team we recommend you to use the following legendary rocket launchers instead:

Each of the above mentioned perks has unique advantages, for example, the Lasting Impression perk, unlike the Explosive Light perk, does not require collecting Power Orbs, and the Frenzy perk will give you a good bonus to Speed and Handling.

Speaking about what Legendary Rocket Launcher you better use, below you will find a detailed info about all of them:

Timelost Hezen Vengeance

Pros:

  • Good reload-related perks, which will be helpful for both high rate of fire (Surplus, Impulse Amplifier) and Special Weapon usage (Auto-Loading Holster). Also has the Overflow perk. which increases the amount of rounds before first reload.
  • Good for farming because of the Lasting Impression and Vorpal Weapon perks.
  • Relatively easy to acquire: this weapon is a guaranteed drop from Master Vault of Glass raid and Gatekeeper Encounter Challenge.
  • Can use Adept Mods.

Cons:

  • Not good for solo-farming.
  • Requires a high Power Level.
  • Cannot be crafted.

Blowout

Pros:

Cons:

  • Is a Crucible random drop. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict how much time you will need to get it. Anywhere between 1 hour and a few days.
  • This weapon has 12 perks in each column, so your chance to get a god-roll is pretty low.
  • Despite having such reload-perks as Impulse Amplifier and Field Prep it is very hard to get them with a proper set of damage-perks, so you can only depend on your luck.

Bump In the Night

Pros:

Cons:

  • Because of the unpopularity of the activity in which this weapon is farmed, it can take weeks to get enough deepsight versions to get the crafting pattern unlocked.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that Gjallarhorn has a lot of analogs, capable of dealing more damage, this old school rocket launcher is still more than usable. This is a great support weapon, which can significantly boost your team's performance if there are players with rocket launchers in it. And still, this weapon can still do decent damage, especially if you have the Catalyst. So, we recommend you to get this iconic weapon and try it in action!
