Local businesses like to support local causes. People may patronize a local business more often if they know that the business puts resources back into helping support the community.

There are many kinds of local businesses that may be willing to donate money or resources, especially if the need is related to their core business. For example, banks may be willing to fund a financial literacy product or a hospital may be willing to purchase a Shaken Baby Simulator.

Contact the local business’s owner or president to see if they would be willing to donate to or support your program/resource needs. Have a specific need or request in mind before you call. The more specific you can be, the better chance you may have at obtaining funding from the business.

Here are a few ideas you may want to try when looking at local businesses to fund a purchasing need:

  • Banks (Wells Fargo, US Bank etc)
  • Insurance companies
  • Hospitals
  • Large national store chains (Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, etc)

Many community and private foundations are interested in funding projects related to education. Many foundations distribute their funds to schools and districts through a competitive grant process. There are also many foundations that have specific missions such as pregnancy prevention, child abuse prevention or parent education.

Contact the foundation’s president to see if they would be willing to donate to or support your program/resource needs. Have a specific need or request in mind before you call. The more specific you can be, the better chance you may have at obtaining funding from the foundation. Carefully read over the procedure, deadlines and criteria before applying for foundation grants.

Sometimes the best fundraising ideas come from other teachers or similar organizations.

  • Baby Shower: If you need more accessories for your RealCare® Program, consider throwing a school-wide Baby shower. Invite students, teachers and community members to donate gently used baby clothing, blankets, diaper bags and car seats. You can gather enough resources to supplement your program for a very long time at no cost!
  • Babysitting Service: You can offer a Babysitting service as a fundraiser during the holiday shopping season. Have students volunteer to babysit for local families so the parents can do their holiday shopping. Funds raised from this effort could be used to purchase low-cost accessories at local thrift stores.
  • Sim Fee: One teacher had each student pay $10 before doing the simulation as a student class fee. This teacher recently retired and she had over $10k saved up which she used to upgrade all of her Babies before the new teacher came in.
  • Candy Sale: A teacher purchased various types of candy wholesale and each day she would open her “store” and sell candy every day after school. This financed the purchase of a new RealCare Baby.
  • Accredited Schools Online
