If you follow The Broke Dog, you know that I LOVE to blab on about how much I love Figo Pet Insurance. We switched to Figo from a competing pet insurance company and loved it so much that we became affiliate partners. I’ve been recommending them ever since. Read on to learn more about why we love our Top Dog Sponsor for this year’s BlogPaws conference!
Disclosure: Figo Pet Insurance is partially sponsoring my trip to BlogPaws in Kansas City this year, and this post is part of that sponsorship. This post also contains affiliate links, which means that I make a small commission if you purCHASE OR REQUEST A QUOTE THROUGH THAT LINK.
PLEASE NOTE: The Broke Dog no longer offers a discount for Figo Pet Insurance.
Figo Helped Change My Life
Back in 2016, when The Broke Dog was just a baby blog, I decided that I wanted to fly out to Phoenix to attend my first BlogPaws conference — a decision which, quite literally, changed my life — but couldn’t justify the cost. I reached out to the few brands I had worked with, hoping one might help sponsor the trip. Figo stepped up with a $200 sponsorship, which covered most of my shared hotel room and made the trip possible. I’m thrilled to announce that Figo Pet Insurance is back again as my Top Dog Sponsor!
Why Insurance is Important
One reason that I am extra thankful for The Broke Dog’s partnership with Figo is actually a great example of why health insurance — human or pet — can be so important. In February, an ultrasound detected a strange lump in my right breast. There was a very high chance it was just a benign, dense fibroadenoma — common in women in my age range — but both my mother and maternal grandmother have had breast cancer and I didn’t want to take any chances.
My insurance deductible is somewhat high, but my plan ended up saving me almost $2500 on this procedure. Thankfully, the mass was benign —but I can’t even begin to think about how much money my health insurance plan would have saved me if it did turn out to be cancer.
Your pet is no different — weird lumps and bumps pop up, a quick jump off the couch can turn to an afternoon of limping, and there is too much enticing garbage on sidewalks. Wouldn’t it be great to go to the vet in one of these circ*mstances without having to worry that your pet’s ailment could bankrupt you? My Figo plan makes it easy to budget for any catastrophic health problems Henry might encounter.
Budgeting Made Easy
Your plan will vary based on your location, your pet, and the options you choose, but for example: I pay about $45 a month for Henry’s Figo plan, which will reimburse me 100% for qualified expenses after a $200 deductible. ( I wish MY deductible was that low!) Since routine care costs don’t change much each year, I know exactly how much a wellness exam, tests, and heartworm and flea and tick prevention costs. Add that to the deductible and monthly premiums, and I know exactly how much I need to budget for vet care in a year. (except for those unqualified expenses, of course — but Figo covers quite a bit!)
I can’t say I know how much a doggie biopsy costs (thankfully!) —but I know it should only end up costing me $200 or so with my Figo plan. That’s peace of mind! (and a heck of a lot better than the $5500 price tag on mine!)

A huge thank you to Figo for helping make this year’s BlogPaws trip a reality, despite my medical bills. If you are attending the conference and have any questions about my experience with Figo, come find me and say hi!
If you chose to receive a check reimbursem*nt, this will be mailed out to your address on file at the time the claim was submitted to Figo. Checks are typically received within 7-10 business days from the date the claim is completed.
A plan for pet owners on a budget that covers 70% of approved vet medical costs up to $10,000 per year with a $1,000 deductible. Figo also offers the following wellness plans and other add-ons, which will increase your monthly premium by the amount listed below.
Premiums for Figo pet insurance will increase every year. Older pets are more likely to incur high-cost claims, so the cost of insurance goes up with your pet's age. Premiums will also increase due to the rising cost of veterinary care.
Figo Pet Insurance was founded in 2013 and is underwritten by the Independence American Insurance Company (IAIC), which has an A rating from AM* Best. Figo is available nationwide and has reimbursed more than $79.9 million to pet parents. We think that Costco Pet Insurance is a great option for Costco members.
Most pet insurance companies will not cover pre-existing conditions or those conditions that show signs or symptoms prior to the policy effective date or during any applicable waiting periods. However, pre-existing conditions do not exclude pets from pet insurance, as new illnesses, and injuries, can still be covered.
For repeat claims, we typically process the claim within 72 hours. First-time claims may take a little longer–between seven and ten business days, depending on when we receive all of your pet's medical records.
Figo has a 14-day waiting period for illnesses, which is average across the pet insurance industry. Figo also has a six-month waiting period for hip dysplasia and orthopedic conditions in dogs, such as knee injuries.
How does Figo calculate my premium? Your premium is generally based on your pet's age, breed, and where your pet lives. Some other factors that impact your premium are: the plan you choose, your deductible, your copay, if you have included optional Powerups or not, and the discounts for which you are eligible.
At Figo, a claim is something you submit when your pet has a medical expense. You submit your claim and Figo pays the expenses that fall under your coverage based on your chosen reimbursem*nt percentage, minus the deductible. If your deductible has been met, Figo reimburses you based solely on your chosen percentage!
Cost of care: Vet costs have gone up over the past few years. Pet insurance may adjust their premiums to help cover the added cost. New city: Pet insurance rates are partially based on costs of care where you live. If you recently moved, your premium may reflect higher costs in your new area.
We found that, on average, pet insurance costs $66 a month for dogs and $32 a month for cats. However, pet insurance premiums typically range from $15 to $90 a month. Pet insurance is an affordable alternative to paying vet bills out of pocket and can offer financial protection against high-cost emergency vet visits.
In addition, Figo also covers veterinary exam fees, MRIs, x-rays, ultrasounds, cancer treatment, knee conditions, alternative and holistic therapies, prosthetics, and veterinary specialists. As with any pet insurance company, there are a few things that Figo doesn't cover, namely: Pre-existing conditions. Routine care.
Figo has only a one-day waiting period for accidents. The waiting period for illness is 14 days and six months for issues like hip dysplasia, knee injuries, and orthopedic conditions.
How do I cancel my policy? You may cancel your policy at any time by emailing us at support@figopetinsurance.com. We would be more than happy to discuss your cancellation over the phone and can be reached at (844)738-3446. Note: We do require the cancellation request in writing, via email.
A pet insurance deductible is the amount you pay for veterinary expenses before your pet insurance starts paying for covered care. The lower your deductible, the less you'll have to pay out of pocket per claim, but you'll also pay a higher insurance premium.
If you have a replacement cost policy for your possessions, you normally need to replace the damaged items before your insurance company will pay you the replacement cost. If you decide not to replace some items, you will be paid their actual cash value. You don't have to decide what to do immediately.
Reimbursem*nts mean that a member must pay for care upfront, and if the medical treatment is covered by the health insurance plan, then the member can file a request to receive reimbursem*nt through their insurance plan.
How does Figo calculate my premium? Your premium is generally based on your pet's age, breed, and where your pet lives. Some other factors that impact your premium are: the plan you choose, your deductible, your copay, if you have included optional Powerups or not, and the discounts for which you are eligible.
