Did these 5 millionaires get rich because of their vegan diets? (2024)

5 vegan millionaires and billionaires – did Mukesh Ambani, John Mackey and Gunhild Stordalen get rich thanks to their plant-based diets?

There are plenty of physical and mental health benefits to derive from a plant-based diet – so it’s no wonder many powerful leaders are embracing meat-free living. Check out what these plant-based power figures have to say about it.

Going vegan: first steps – and why more of us are making the switch

Gunhild Stordalen

Top of our list is Norwegian physician and environmental activist Gunhild Stordalen, otherwise known as the world's most glamorous vegan billionaire. Her plant-based way of life is so hardcore, her entire career revolves around it. She is the founder and president of Eat Forum, a platform that works on transforming the global food system via science and business. She also chairs the environmental research organisation GreeNudge and engages in philanthropic causes with her husband, real estate mogul Petter Stordalen, via the Stordalen Foundation.

Mukesh Ambani

This Indian billionaire is not only loved for his friendliness and low-key fashion choices, but also for his environmentally-friendly lifestyle. If you don’t already know, Asia’s richest man is actually a devout vegetarian. When not too busy overseeing his multiple business ventures, Ambani can be spotted at Mysore Café, his favourite vegetarian eatery in Mumbai. Apparently, this businessman is a (plant-based) creature of habit, seeing that he has loved the cafe since his days in college.

John Mackey

As the CEO of Whole Foods Market, John Mackey has to embody his own message of maintaining good health through food. And judging by the fact that he’s been a vegetarian for three decades, we’d say he lives up to his legacy very well. But did you know that he recently converted to veganism? That’s right: Mackey operates a strict diet of three organic vegan meals per day. He maintains his regime by omitting casual snacks and enjoying medjool dates only occasionally.

Biz Stone

We suspect that a key ingredient to Twitter co-founder Biz Stone’s net worth of US$200 million is his ultra-healthy diet – really. This tech leader is known to have been vegan for more than a decade now. It’s not surprising to see why, as vegan diets are found to increase focus, which he clearly needs and thrives on. Stone loves his plant-based meals so much, he decided to invest in Beyond Meat, a company that produces meatless chicken strips and other plant-based meat substitutes.

Why plant-based ‘chicken’ will be the foodie trend of 2020

Joi Ito

Japanese venture capitalist Joi Ito started his healthy diet quite late in life, electing to adopt a super-strict vegan diet for six months after he turned 40. Needless to say, he’s been in his best shape since. Unlike other leaders in this list, though, Ito isn’t overly strict with his diet. Case in point: he has, in recent years, eased into pescetarianism, a dietary approach that includes seafood on top of plant-based foods.
