Cowboy culture in the American West can be traced to the Spanish tradition of the vaquero. These were the workers, not the ricos or the wealthy caballeros. What's the difference between a vaquero and a caballero? A caballero was a gentleman on horseback and a vaquero was a worker on horseback who worked the cattle.

The standards of its culture demand that Cowboys treat every individual with dignity and respect, recognizing that, as with all families, differences can serve to strengthen and enrich the fabric of life. It welcomes questions in the spirit of honest inquiry and does not shy away from asking the big questions.

A cowboy is defined as a person who tends to cattle or horses on horseback. The traditions of American West cowboys originated in Spain, where vaqueros, mounted ranch hands, were known for their superior roping, riding, and herding abilities and worked on cattle farms.

Working up to 20 hours a day, cowboys drove the animals from one watering place to the next. They had to guard against predators (two- and four-footed), straying cattle, and stampedes at night. For his hard and dirty work the typical cowboy earned between $25 and $40 a month.

Very shiny, not well worn, no marks on the heels from spurs or rub spots from spur straps over the front? Real pointy toes, unless he's a Mexican cowboy, are a dead giveaway with most top hands preferring squared toes to not gouge the sides of green or broncy horses while mounting.

First chronicled by the famous western writer, Zane Grey, in his 1934 novel The Code of the West, no "written" code ever actually existed. However, the hardy pioneers who lived in the west were bound by these unwritten rules that centered on hospitality, fair play, loyalty, and respect for the land.

Cowboys wore special clothing that helped them with their jobs. They wore large 10-gallon hats to protect them from the sun and the rain. They wore special cowboy boots with pointed toes that helped them to slip in and out of the stirrups when riding a horse.
