Can the demat account be closed while keeping the trading account open?
The demat account cannot be closed without closing the trading account for the following reasons:
- Equity intraday positions have to be settled to the demat account if they are not closed by the end of the day.
- All stock F&O contracts are settled physically to the demat account. See Policy on settlement of compulsory delivery derivative contracts.

Regarding the information provided in the article, let's break down the key concepts:
-
Demat Account: This account, short for dematerialized account, holds shares and securities in electronic form. It's essential for holding and transferring stocks, eliminating the need for physical share certificates.
-
Trading Account: This account enables buying and selling securities, including stocks, commodities, derivatives, etc. It's the platform used to execute trades in the market.
-
Closing Demat Account while Keeping Trading Account Open: In the realm of stock trading, it's generally not possible to close a demat account while keeping the trading account open. There's an inherent connection between these accounts:
-
Equity Intraday Positions Settlement: Any equity intraday positions that aren't closed by the end of the trading day have to be settled in the demat account.
-
Physical Settlement of Stock F&O Contracts: Stock Futures & Options (F&O) contracts are settled physically into the demat account.
-
Linking Multiple Demat Accounts: While multiple demat accounts might be linked to a single trading account, typically, only one demat account can remain linked while the rest are closed. This consolidation streamlines operations and reduces complexities.
-
Inability to Close Trading Account Without Closing Demat Account: The trading account is inherently linked to the demat account. Thus, generally, you can't close the trading account without closing the associated demat account.
-
In summary, the demat account and trading account are intricately linked, and while certain adjustments can be made regarding multiple demat accounts linked to a trading account, the general principle remains that the demat account can't be closed while keeping the trading account open due to the settlement processes and their interdependence.
If you're considering making changes to your demat or trading accounts, it's advisable to consult with your brokerage or financial advisor to understand the specific procedures and implications based on your circ*mstances and the prevailing regulations.
