Best Resale Value Luxury Car Brands for 2021: Porsche Prime (2024)

Which has better resale values: Audi or Mercedes-Benz?

Bob HernandezWriterThe ManufacturerPhotographerMotorTrend StaffPhotographer

Many luxury car buyers prioritize design and performance, but depreciation and resale value also need to be taken into consideration. You're not going to keep that car forever, and your purchasing decision now could make the difference in how much you have for the car after this one.

Resale values vary greatly among luxury brands. Working with IntelliChoice, we put together this list based on projections of depreciation after five years of ownership. A high-end product that holds its value seems like a win-win to us. Here's a shortlist of brands that can facilitate that.

Audi – 45.7 Percent Retained Value (after five years)

In general, Audi's larger sedans are expected to retain less of their original value after five years than the brand's SUVs, small cars, and performance cars. The 2021 A8 plug-in hybrid sedan, for example, is projected to retain just 34.1 percent, the least in the lineup, but the TT Coupe will hold onto 49.3 percent of its value after five years, and the Convertible should keep 49.1 percent. The average from the entire range comes out to an estimated 45.7 percent retained value after five years.

Land Rover – 46.9 Percent Retained Value (after five years)

Count on Land Rover to deliver SUVs with legitimate go-anywhere capability, refinement, and style. They also apparently resist acute depreciation. The British brand's midsize three-row Discovery—namely the R-Dynamic P360 model with the turbocharged inline-six powertrain—depreciates the least among its 2021 range mates, with a projected 49.6 percent resale value. Range Rovers don't hold their value as well, but the Land Rover lineup is expected to retain 46.9 percent of its value.

Best Resale Value Luxury Car Brands for 2021: Porsche Prime (3)

Volvo – 47.2 Percent Retained Value (after five years)

There's a stark difference in retained values between Volvo cars and SUVs. No 2021 Volvo sedan or wagon is projected to hold onto more than 42.5 percent of its original value after five years, and most are under 40 percent. Conversely, every Volvo SUV except the XC40 Recharge EV retains more than 45 percent of its initial value after five years. IntelliChoice says the XC90, Volvo's largest and oldest SUV, retains a range-topping 50.8 percent of its value when it's equipped with the model's T6 twin-charged inline four-cylinder powertrain.

Best Resale Value Luxury Car Brands for 2021: Porsche Prime (4)

Mercedes-Benz – 47.2 Percent Retained Value (after five years)

Mercedes has only a few models from its extensive lineup that are projected to retain less than 40 percent of their original value after five years. S-Class cars, AMG GT 4-Door Coupes, and the Maybach GLS SUV are among the 2021 vehicles expected to depreciate the most. On the opposite end of that spectrum, the German brand has many more entries that hold onto 50 percent or more of their original value. The GLA, GLB, and GLC SUV retain their value best, as do the C63 AMG Coupe and E63 AMG Wagon. The GLC300 Coupe is the top Benz in resale value after five years, projected to hold onto 53.3 percent of its original value.

Best Resale Value Luxury Car Brands for 2021: Porsche Prime (5)

Lexus – 53.2 Percent Retained Value (after five years)

Lexus is known for the same reliability as parent Toyota, which might be partly why its vehicles hold their value so well. In fact, IntelliChoice has awarded four 2021 Lexus models with Highest Retained Value distinctions: the ES300h hybrid midsize sedan, IS350 compact sedan, RC350 coupe, and RX350 midsize SUV. With one exception, the LS500, every 2021 Lexus is expected to retain at least 48 percent of its original value after five years (which is more than the national average).

Best Resale Value Luxury Car Brands for 2021: Porsche Prime (6)

Porsche – 58.0 Percent Retained Value (after five years)

It's not unusual to see 2021 911, Cayman/Boxster, Macan, and Cayenne models projected to hold onto more than 50 or in many cases 60 percent of their original value after a half decade. The common thread among the Porsche cars expected to depreciate the most is that they use alternative propulsion systems. All 2021 Cayenne and Cayenne Coupe E-Hybrids are expected to retain less than 49.6 percent of the initial value, and the Taycan EV is the 2021 Porsche predicted to have the lowest retained value: just 46.3 percent. But those cars are just a drop in the bucket. An abundance of well-built gas burners keeps Porsche's resale values up.
