Tesla is officially the leading luxury car brand in the U.S., beating out BMW.

Key Details

  • Tesla has passed BMW as the top luxury car brand in the U.S., according to new car registration data by Experian in partnership with Automotive News.
  • Tesla had 484,351 new vehicle registrations last year, followed by BMW with 327,929 new registrations.
  • The EV brand had a 41% increase in new registrations from 2021, while BMW registrations fell 4% in the same period.
  • The only brand other than Tesla to see an increase in new registrations was GM’s Cadillac division featuring a 6.5% increase with 133,000 new registrations.

Why it’s news

Tesla has been having a tough year, with supply-chain issues and seeing its stock value drop by more than 50%.

Now it is officially the leading luxury car brand in the U.S., beating BMW for the top spot.

The electric-vehicle brand had 484,351 new vehicle registrations in 2022, increasing 41% from 2021, according to data by Experian. The increase took the brand to the top spot overtaking BMW, which only had 327,929 new registrations for the year.

The data marks the first time Tesla has been the number one luxury car brand in the U.S. It also shows that overall luxury car sales have been down, falling 3.5% from 2021.

BMW followed Tesla with 327,929 new registrations for the year, but while Tesla had a 41% increase BMW fell 4% within the same time period.

BMW’s slight decrease in sales isn’t too concerning, considering the only other luxury brand to see an increase in numbers was GM’s Cadillac division featuring a 6.5% increase with 133,000 new registrations.

Tesla suffered a rough year last year, but the company seems to be back on the incline selling more cars and meeting more expectations.
