We love eating the best food anywhere we travel but also are always out hunting for deals. For this reason, we made it our mission to get the best of both worlds! This Stockholm food tour will have you sampling many traditional Swedish specialties, all without breaking the bank. We made this article in a food lovers day style as many travelers will only have a day or two in the capital. This was our Stockholm food tour from breakfast to dinner with some fun treats mixed in between. Use this is a loose guide but also make sure to seek out your own food in Stockholm as you wander around the city!
One Day Stockholm Food Tour
Fika Breakfast
Where: Café Schweizer
Order: Coffee & Kanelbullar (Fika)

Fika is a well-celebrated morning tradition in Stockholm, and easy to experience as a local or tourist. Simply walk into any Stockholm bakery or cafe and order a coffee with Kanelbullar. Sweden is known as one of the heaviest coffee drinking countries in the world so you don’t have to worry about getting a good cup of joe here!
However, looking for what to eat in Stockholm for breakfast is a different story. The Kanelbullar is essentially a braided cinnamon sticky bun and the most delicious one we’ve ever had as well. The way it’s baked allows for the maximum amount of flavor to be cooked in, and the Fika coffee combo is out of this world.
We should note that this is typically enjoyed during the afternoon by people from Sweden. However, we couldn’t resist having this special treat first thing in the morning!
Herring Burger for Lunch
Where: Nystekt Stromming
Order: Herring Burger or Herring Plate
Cost: $7-9 USD

It wouldn’t be a Stockholm food tour without getting some fish, and we have the perfect lunch stop! Nystekt Stromming is more of a food cart than a restaurant, but it’s nice that all of the best food in Stockholm isn’t only at fancy establishments. The specialty is fried herring here, and you can order it as a plate with crackers or as a burger.
Honestly, this place is so good we went here EVERY DAY on our visit to Stockholm! The freshness of the herring blends perfectly with the veggie fixings and creates an explosion of flavors with each bite. As far as cheap eats in Stockholm go, it’ll be hard to find something better than Nystekt Stromming!
Stockholm Food Tip: You’ll have your choice of sauces to go with your herring at this lunch spot. We highly recommend going with the dill mayo, especially if you’re getting the burger!
Cheap Eats in Stockholm Snack
Where: Hotdog Stand
Order: Swedish Hotdog

Outside of a bakery or morning Fika you won’t find a better street snack than a hot dog. In some areas of the city, they overwhelm you on every corner so it’s highly likely you’ll eat one at some point just strolling around.
I know what some of you may be thinking… A hot dog?? All we can say is don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Hot dogs are easily some of the best cheap eats in Stockholm! Plus they come with way more fixings than your standard American one. We had the pleasure of trying the classic Stockholmer dog on our visit. Typically this is a long hot dog with fried onions on top, plus any other sauces you want to add.
Want something a little more daring on your Stockholm food tour? Head over to Günters for the real deal! Here you’ll find the explosive taste of the tunnbrödsrulle, which combines the pork sausage with mashed potatoes, fried onions, and shrimp salad. While they may not be as good as the reindeer sausage we had in Bergen Norway, a hot dog is still the ultimate cheap eats in Stockholm snack.

Sweden Meatball Dinner

When looking for what to eat in Stockholm there’s no way you can skip the meatballs! This Swedish specialty is a must on your visit to the city, and there’s no better place to get it than Meatballs for the People.
The classic meatball plate comes with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables, making for the perfect dinner combo. They also have a free sidebar of pickled onions, radishes, and cauliflower to really bring your meal together!
Stockholm Food Tip: If you head here for lunch instead of dinner on your Stockholm food tour go right when they open at 11:00am. At the time of writing this, there is a 30 Krona ($3 USD) discount for patrons arriving from 11:00-11:30am!
Dessert at a Waffle Cake Stand

So what’s gonna tie all these cheap eats in Stockholm together to end your food lovers day? Well, with one walk down Västerlånggatan Street it won’t even be a question! This is the waffle cake epicenter, and it will bring even the most hardcore dessert connoisseurs to their knees!
While they may be thinner than Belgian waffles, the Swedish version is also covered in strawberries, chocolate syrup, and whatever else you’d like on top. For a different variation, grab a waffle cone with ice cream or other yummy treats at a nearby Stockholm bakery.
