I’ve broken down the income and costs for this month below and given a quick snippet of why I made each choice.

Profits

  • Main Street By Becca orders$269.71 – MSbB is the very first Etsy shop that I opened. It’s aimed at creating accessories and planning materials for your Disney vacation. you can check out the shop here!

Expenses

  • Main Street Etsy fees$134.74 – These fees include listing, ads, shipping labels, and Etsy Plus. I do not suggest purchasing Etsy Plus until you know your shop will, at the bottom line, make over $10 a month. The benefits aren’t worth it otherwise. However, it does allow you to do some custom layouts and links that I’m expecting to increase profit on my shop. This is the first month I’ve had it, so I’ll give you an update after I’ve worked with it a bit. Shipping labels were honestly the biggest cost here at a whopping $94.51. Ouch. And that’s with a discounted label from Etsy over the USPS cost. I did list some face masks this month though, which I only charged for supplies and shipping, so my profit vs. cost margin in this shop is a lot lower than normal. I also didn’t have any custom orders which usually brings up the profit side.
  • Rebecca Bryant Design Etsy fees$5 – This is the shop I just opened on Etsy, it’s target market is people just like you who want to organize their life and plan for a new family or baby. This is a fully digital shop, so the only expenses were listing costs, unlike MSbB. Visit the shop here. If you want to start a new Etsy shop, you can actually get 40 free listings here, which would’ve made this category $0 for me if I’d remembered that (insert face palm)
  • TubeBuddy $43.20 – This is a tagging and SEO software that I use to help promote my YouTube channel. It’s great for those who don’t really know the best tricks to get discovered on YouTube searches and organically, which is something I’m still learning. I purchased it for a year, so we will revisit next year if I’ll renew or not.
  • Adobe $32.46 – I use Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite literally every day. I’m designing things on Photoshop, editing videos, fixing up photos in Lightroom. I also have the benefit of being in the education sector, so I actually get a discount on this. I might look into paying for this yearly and see if I can save any extra money there.
  • HP Instant Ink$3.27 – To make the buttons in my Main Street shop I have to use a lot of ink at high printing quality. This subscription service saves me a ton of money, I really need to make a blog post on why you should be looking into it.
  • New business license$75 – I’m going to admit here, I should’ve done this over a year and a half ago. My business was still licensed to our old apartment address, so I made sure to switch that this month and bite the cost bullet.

Final Total: -$23.96

This last month was low for a couple reasons, one being the pandemic going on right now and the other being that I had a lot of new costs and startup expenses that I expect to help turn a profit in coming months. Definitely don’t stay under the assumption that starting a business is free, you will have to invest money to get started. But the benefit of doing something like investing in better products, training, or updates is that you can increase your profits exponentially.

Check back next month for the updated numbers!
