If someone has joined the meeting and then left, the meeting will terminate after 40 minutes of no activity. To avoid the automatic termination, after someone has left the meeting, and if no one else is in the waiting room, end the meeting and then restart it.
But in May 2022, the company announced it would now be limited to 40 minutes. That's the same restriction that has always applied for anywhere between three and 100 participants. Once that mark has been reached, everyone will be kicked out of the call.
One-on-one meetings set up using a free account will now automatically end after 40 minutes. Those of you who create Zoom meetings with a free account will now be kicked off after 40 minutes no matter how many people are on the call.
Since the 40 minute time limit is only for the free plan, you can simply upgrade to a Pro account to extend your Zoom meeting time. By upgrading to a Pro account, which costs $14.99 /license per month, the meeting host can conduct meetings with a 30-hour time limit — which is more than enough for any user.
Zoom lifted the time limit in early March 2020 and is now ending the program on June 30, 2022.

Hi all - In support of primary and secondary education (K-12) and due to the ongoing pandemic, Zoom just announced that they will continue to lift the 40-minute time limit on existing education accounts through June 30, 2022.
If your meeting runs over the scheduled time, it will continue running without disruption until you actually end it or leave it. It will not automatically end no matter how long you leave it running.
