Why are GPUs still so expensive?

In 2021, there was a GPU shortage, which is why GPUs are so hard to find. The coronavirus pandemic caused a chip shortage, making it difficult for Nvidia and AMD to produce enough cards to keep up with demand.
The overriding reason graphics cards are so expensive right now is due to supply and demand. There are simply not enough graphics cards available to meet demand around the world and as with any product in that situation, the price has gone up as a result.
The GeForce GTX 16 series pricing has fallen by 16 percent on average, with over 20 percent drops for the 1660 series in particular. The entire lineup is now being sold used for at or below the MSRP, and you will no longer find 16 series cards above $200 on average.
While Nvidia RTX 30 cards are still slightly more expensive than AMD's offerings, this is the first time since January 2021 that the latter's video cards have dropped below 10% over MSRP. Despite being a more costly option, the former's range of RTX 3000 boards remains popular within the GPU industry.
But across the board, prices are way down from their 2021 peaks. Data from Graphic Speak's Jon Peddie, comparing the current and peak prices for a handful of current-generation GPUs. Note that the RTX 3050 and RTX 6500 XT launched in early 2022; their prices were never as inflated as some of the higher-end models.
Tom's notes that the overall GPU price drop since the start of 2022 is 57% on average, showing just how far price tags have come down in the first half of this year.

The publication suggests that the price drops are unprecedented, as the firm usually only discounts niche products and older processors.
A new report from 3DCenter indicates graphics cards are closer to MSRP than they've been since January 2021. These figures align with experts' estimates that consumer tech will see a return to normalcy possibly as soon as the second half of 2022.
There is no way to have absolute certainty on these things, but many signs are pointing to the prediction that GPU prices will continue dropping. AMD and Nvidia both have large stocks of current-gen GPUs waiting to be sold before the next generation swoops in and steals the spotlight completely.

Based on its CUDA core count and similar clock speed, the RTX 3090 could be 70% to 80% faster than the 2080 Ti — even more so in the right games.

Why is RTX so expensive?
The RTX's exorbitant pricing here could be chalked up to one of three things.
