Who uses the most energy in the world?
1. China. Asian powerhouse China tops the world's list in electricity consumption, using more than 6.3 trillion kilowatts of energy per-hour annually. The country, which is claimed to be the world's largest producer and consumer of coal, has shifted its focus to natural gas and renewable sources in recent years.
China is the largest consumer of primary energy in the world, using some 157.65 exajoules in 2021. This is far more than was consumed by the United States, which ranks second. The majority of primary energy fuels are still derived from fossil fuels such as oil and coal.
1. Iceland - 18,774 kg. Yes, that's right, Iceland. Of all the countries in the world, including the richest and largest oil producers, Iceland consumes the most energy per person.
Oil – 39% Accounting for approximately 39% of the global energy consumption, oil has historically been the world's most used energy source. Despite a decline over the past two decades, the demand for oil has remained high principally due to demand from emerging economies, especially non-OECD countries.

While China is becoming the world's leader in total consumption of some commodities (coal, copper, etc.), the U.S. remains the per capita consumption leader for most resources. Overall, National Geographic's Greendex found that American consumers rank last of 17 countries surveyed in regard to sustainable behavior.
China's population of 1.38 billion consumes about 4.7 billion metric tons of fossil fuels per year, 31 percent of global consumption.
Globally we get the largest amount of our energy from oil, followed by coal, gas, then hydroelectric power. As we look at in more detail below – “How much of global energy comes from low-carbon sources?” – the global energy mix is still dominated by fossil fuels. They account for more than 80% of energy consumption.
Here's what uses the most energy in your home:
Cooling and heating: 47% of energy use. Water heater: 14% of energy use. Washer and dryer: 13% of energy use. Lighting: 12% of energy use.
Which sector uses the most energy?
The industrial sector is the greatest energy end-user in the United States, reaching a consumption of some 26.9 quadrillion British thermal units in 2021. Total U.S. energy consumption initially rose between 1975 and 2000, and has remained relatively steady since then, only decreasing in years of economic downturn.
